1855 (Jun. 4) Bordeaux, France to San Francisco, Cal., folded shipping invoice for wine (10 casks claret 1851) bearing France 10c and 20c Empire issue tied by diamond lozenge cancels, matching "Bordeaux, 4 Juin 55" origin cds, carried as endorsed by French Ship Confiance from Bordeaux to San Francisco, perfect bold strikes of "San Francisco Cal. 29 Oct." cds and "Ship 6" clamshell due rating handstamp; inside with original "Consulate of the United States of America, Bordeaux" illustrated certification signed by the U.S. consul and showing the official consulate seal; file fold affects 10c, Very Fine and interesting U.S. consul use.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE CHARLESTON "STEAMSHIP 20" RATING CIRCULAR HANDSTAMP.

This cover is illustrated and discussed in Wierenga's Incoming Steamship Mail on pp. 185-86, fig. 249. The other recorded cover is an apparently triple weight cover as it also bears a "Steamship 10" circular handstamp that was not crossed out.
