1865 (Nov. 21) St. Thomas, D.W.I. to Baltimore Md., blue folded James T. Abbott & Co's printed circular datelined "St. Thomas, 21st November, 1865" and with "Per U.S.M.S. 'Havana' " directive, carried as endorsed by USBMSC Havana on the first northbound return voyage departing St. Thomas Nov. 22nd to New York arriving Dec. 1st, entered mails with 2¢ black (73), tied by N.Y. Circular Mail circle of wedge cancel; 2¢ small flaws from edge placement.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF MAIL CARRIED ON THE FIRST VOYAGE OF THE US BRAZIL MAIL STEAMSHIP COMPANY.

The United States and Brazil Mail Steamship Company was the first American steam passenger line to South America. Opened in November 1865, it was by far the largest carrier of mail and passengers to South America until its closing in 1875. This is the earliest recorded use of the 1866 2¢ Black Jack on DWI mails.

Apr 30" double-circle datestamp and bearing 5¢ brown, 10¢ green (76, 68) tied by cogwheel fancy cancels, red "New York '12' May 22" exchange cds, carried by Cunard Line China from Boston May 23rd to Queenstown arriving Jun. 1st, red Calais (6.3) entry cds and large framed "P.D." handstamp, reverse with Paris (6.3) and Bordeaux (6.4) arrival cds, Very Fine and attractive.

1866 (Aug. 16) San Francisco, Cal. to Herford, Germany, cover with neat "San Francisco Cal Aug 16" cds and bearing three 10¢ green (68) overlapping singles tied by cogwheel fancy cancels, overpaying the 30¢ Prussian Closed Mail rate by 2¢, red "N. York Am Pkt '7 Paid' Sep 3" exchange cds, blue Aachen Franco (9.10) framed transit, German (9.11) arrival backstamp; small flaws, some docketing, Fine.

1866 (Oct. 17) London, England to Charleston S.C., datelined folded letter with London (10.27) cds and matching "38 / Cents" double-weight debit handstamp to U.S., manuscript rating crossed out, carried by Cunard Line Java from Queenstown Oct. 28th to Boston Nov. 7th, partial "Boston Br. Pkt. '48' Nov 7" exchange debit cds, matching bold "In U.S. Notes / 67" circular depreciated currency marking; minor tape staining, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter was double rate and required 2x 24¢ = 48¢ postage due if paid in coin, or 67¢ in depreciated currency.

1867 (Feb. 27) Guatemala to San Francisco Cal., datelined folded letter with partial strike of "Correos, Feb 27" cds at bottom, red "Franco" framed handstamp and reverse with black "1" reales rating handstamp for postage to port, entered U.S. mails with "San Francisco Cal. '10' Apr 2" integral due cds and matching "Steam Panama" oval handstamp; minor opening tear top right, Very Fine.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

A CHOICE "STEAM PANAMA" USE FROM CHILE TO SAN FRANCISCO CAL.

The San Francisco "Steam Panama" marking was applied to non-contract mail entering the port to indicate transit origin.

1868 (May 14) New York N.Y. to Breckenheim, Wurttemberg, orange buff cover bearing 10¢ green (96), well centered within large margins, tied by NYFM circle of wedges, red "New York PAid All 'Direct' May 14" exchange cds, carried by NGL Line New York from New York May 14th to Bremen arriving May 27th, dark red Bremen Franco (5.27.68) framed transit, reverse with "K. Wurtt, Bahnpost" transit and Breckenheim (5.28) arrival backstamp, Very Fine.

Smith correspondence bearing Nevis 4d orange (10) horizontal pair, pre-use tear, each cancelled by "A09" oval grid cancel, matching "Nevis, JA 1, 1869" double-arc origin backstamp, carried by RMSP steamer to St. Thomas where "St. Thomas, B, JA 13 69" transit backstamp struck, then carried by USBMSC South America departing Jan. 14th to New York arriving Jan. 21st, clear strike of "Steamship 20" rating handstamp for double the 10¢ steamship rate just ties pair; horizontal fold and edge tear, Fine, a rare use from Nevis to the United States.
