1869 (Sep. 21) San Francisco Cal. To Treuen, Germany, yellow cover with green all-over J.C. Meussdorffer & Co. dealer in hats shaded ad bearing 10¢ yellow green, F. grill tied by circle of wedges cancel duplexed with "San Francisco Cal. Sep 8" cds, red "New York Paid All Direct Sep 21" exchange cds, German (10.7) arrival backstamp; 10¢ corner crease, Very Fine and attractive.

Lot 941    

1870 (Feb. 8) Trinidad to Philadelphia, Pa., datelined blue folded letter carried by private ship to St. Thomas, red "Lamp & Co., St. Thomas W.I." forwarder's oval at lower left and strike on reverse, carried by USBMSC North America departing Feb. 14th to New York arriving Aug. 21st, entered mails with 10¢ yellow (116) tied by "N.York Steamship Feb 21" cds; "Philadelphia Received Feb 21 12 AM" backstamp and offset on face, F.-V.F., a scarce use from Trinidad via St. Thomas forwarder.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

From about 1863, the Post Office in St. Thomas stocked and sold U.S. 10¢ stamps (and probably 2¢ values) to prepay U.S. steamship postage. The local 3¢ DWI postage was paid in cash.

1871 (Feb. 18) Detroit Mich. to Perthshire, Scotland, red "Detroit Paid All Direct Feb 18" exchange cds on cover bearing 6¢ carmine (148), cancelled by neat circular grid cancel, carried by Allan Line Moravia from Portland Feb. 19th to Liverpool arriving Mar. 2nd, Liverpool Paid U.S. Packet (3.6.71) arrival cds, reverse with Sterling (3.6) and Callander (3.7) transits, original 1871 enclosure, 6¢ couple tiny perf tears, F.-V.F., a scarce Detroit exchange office use.

U.S. Postal Agcy, Shanghai, Jan 12, clear strike of cds on circa 1874 cover to Salisbury N.C. bearing 10¢ brown (150) horizontal pair tied by two bold strikes of circle of wedges cancels prepaying double the 10¢ transpacific rate, carried by PMSS New York from Shanghai Jan. 12th to Yokohama arriving Jan. 20th, then PMSS Japan departing Yokohama Jan. 23rd to San Francisco arriving Feb. 12th, a clean and Very Fine double-weight use from Shanghai.

1874 (Dec. 20) Philadelphia Pa. to Russikon, Switzerland, blue folded letter bearing 10¢ brown (161) tied by Philadelphia three-bar grid foreign mail cancel, Philadelphia merchant oval, endorsed "Per Str. Mosel from New York" at top, red "New York Paid All via Eng. & Ostd. Dec 20" exchange cds, Basel (1.2.74) backstamp, Very Fine and choice use, ex-Mercedes, Kirke, Richards.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

This cover was carried privately from Philadelphia to New York City after cancellation, and not postmarked until handled by the New York exchange office. It was carried on NGL Line "Mosel" arriving at Southampton on December 31, 1873.

Alaska" handstamp and manuscript endorsement at left, entering the U.S. mails with 1875, 5¢ blue tied by "New - York, Oct 20, 81" duplex postmark, receiving backstamp; barest cover reduction at right, Very Fine.

Stevens, U.S. Despatch Agent in London, England, reverse with blue Paris (2.18) dispatch cds and London (2.19) arrival cds, purple "United States Despatch Agent, B.F. Stevens, London, 20 Feb 85" oval handstamp and readdressed with matching purple "United States Consul" straightline and magenta "Sierra Leone"; opened at top, Very Fine and choice.

United States Consulate, Ningpo, China, Nov 30, 1892, purple serrated oval receiving handstamp on cover bearing 5¢ chocolate (223), tied by "Boston Mass., Oct 30 '92" duplex, addressed to Hon. John Fowler at the U.S. Consulate in Ningpo, China, San Francisco (11.4) and U.S. Postal Agency Shanghai (11.29) backstamps, printed Revere House corner card, Very Fine and choice use of the scarce Ningpo consular marking.
