Barrel, perfect bold strike duplexed with partial "Oil City Pa. Sep 14" cds ties 3¢ rose (65) on cover to Pontiac Mich., 1866 notation on back; barely reduced at right, clean and Very Fine; with 2014 P.F. certificate.

A REMARKABLE EXAMPLE OF THIS EXTREMELY RARE FANCY CANCEL, LIKELY THE FINEST KNOWN STRIKE.

Another on cover example of this fancy cancel dated Oct. 13th was recently offered by Siegel, but it had an inferior strike and realized $3,105. Oil City was one of the petroleum boomtowns that thrived after Col. Drake drilled the first commercially successful well in nearby Titusville on August 27, 1859.
