THE EARLIEST OF ONLY NINE RECORDED RE-L1 COVERS.

Carried by the Alexandre Line "Cleopatra" that departed New York May 1, 1873 and arrived at Progresso, Mexico on May 17. Weiss incorrectly listed this cover in his book as a May 4, but is actually May 1 and tied for the earliest strike.

Radial Geometric, perfect strike ties 5¢ Taylor (179) on 1876 cover to Glasgow, Scotland, red "New York 'D' Nov 4" exchange cds, Glasgow (11.16.76) arrival backstamp, Very Fine.
Weiss Nos. TR-S5    Estimate $200 - 300.

The New York "D" exchange cds has perplexed students, but it is believed to mean "Direct" mail. This exchange cds is one of the rarer New York types (Weiss Postmark #12).

This cancel is similar to Skinner NYFM 67-8 but with minor differences.
