San Francisco, Cal., registry label with sheet margin selvage on cover from Brigham, Utah to Taiohae, Nukuhiva, Marquesas Islands (now French Polynesia), franked with pen-cancelled 8¢ violet brown and 10¢ orange brown (272, 282C) for the double UPU registry rate, manuscript "Via San Francisco and New Zealand", purple "Brigham, Utah Jul 9, 1900" boxed postmark, San Francisco (7.12) and Papeete, Tahiti (8.14) backstamps, Very Fine and exceedingly rare destination, ex-A.R.T. collection.

Nukahiva Island, a small speck in the South Pacific, was surely the recipient of very little registered mail. The return address suggests the recipient was a Mormon Missionary.

San Francisco, Cal. & New York, N.Y., four registry labels on 1900 registered cover from Peking, China to Lima, Peru, eventually returned to sender, bearing China CIP 10c green pair tied by Peking cds on reverse for domestic postage, front with Japan P.O. 20s red orange tied by "Shanghai, I.J.P.O. Mar" cds for foreign postage, various markings and transit backstamps, Japanese registry label affixed, two each of San Francisco and New York registry labels representing the outward and return voyages, Lima (9.23) backstamp and purple "Parti" and "Rebut" handstamps, oval Peking (12.20) arrival backstamp; some faults and soiling, full of character, Fine.

A REMARKABLE FOREIGN MAIL REGISTERED USE FROM CHINA TO PERU.

Chinese mail to or from South America is very rare in the early 1900s and this registered cover is exceptional. From a registry seal perspective, it is the only example of double New York and San Francisco labels, plus a Japanese label brings the total to five (the highest we have noted on one cover).
