Matthew Carey was an influential journalist and publisher. He published the periodical American Museum before 1800, and the Port Folio, a literary and critical journal that began in Jan. 1801. Philadelphia's "4" handstamps (there were three sizes) were the first numeral handstamps to be used in the United States.
