1723 (Jun. 22) Choptank Md. to Yorkshire, England, datelined folded letter endorsed "By Bedle Bagg" at lower left, London "2/NO" bishop mark backstamp and manuscript "1/-" shilling rating, some soiling, Fine and very early Colonial transatlantic use.

1734 (Jul. 26) Lancaster, England to Philadelphia Pa., Quaker datelined folded letter to William Backhouse from his wife endorsed "This to be forwarded by Thomas Jackson in Cornhill, London", bold "Lancaster" straightline and partial Sep. bishop mark, entered mails with "Bos Shp. 7 dw. 16 gr." postmark and rating to Philadelphia; accompanied by a slightly earlier William Backhouse letter to his wife at Lancaster datelined "Philadelphia 4th 6th Mo. 1734" and carried privately to England, manuscript markings and London "30/SE" Bishop postmark; some edge wear, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

AN INTERESTING PAIR OF LETTERS TO AND FROM PHILADELPHIA QUAKER MISSIONARY WILLIAM BACKHOUSE, ONE HAVING A RARE AND EARLY EXAMPLE OF THE "BOS" SHIP MARKING KNOWN USED 1734-35.

The Quaker Backhouse family was powerful and wealthy with many interests. These included the Stockton and Darlington Railway, horticulture and botany and banking.

1746 (Apr. 10) Charles Town S.C. to London, England, folded cover from the known correspondence to Rev. Dr. Philip Bearcroft, Sec. to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Ports at London, carried transatlantic privately and posted with London Dockwra backstamp for 1 pence delivery, docketed as "S. Carolina, Mr. Durand, April 10th 1746" on flap, and "Rec'd 12 Jany 1746" (1747); some separations hinge reinforced, otherwise Very Fine.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

1749 (Mar. 3) London, England to Newport R.I., datelined folded letter from the Vernon correspondence, carried transatlantic by private ship, entered the mails at Boston with "B Sh" postmark and "3/8" 3 dwt 8gr rating, Very Fine and choice.
