1845 (Mar. 28) Halifax, England to Philadelphia Pa., gray folded letter with blue "Halifax, MR 28 1845" backstamp and matching "Paid at Halifax" oval handstamp and red manuscript "8" pence rating, "Ship-Letter, Liverpool, MR 29, 45" rimless crown cds on flap, carried as endorsed by Great Western from Liverpool Mar. 29th to New York arriving Apr. 16th, ed "New-York 'Ship' Apr 16" cds and blue "14½" due rating for 12½¢ inland plus 2¢ ship fee, Very Fine.

Lot 358    

1845 (Jun. 3) Birmingham, England to Philadelphia Pa., folded letter with "Birmingham, JU 3, 1845" double-arc cds and red manuscript "1/-" shilling packet rating, carried by Cunard Line Caledonia from Liverpool Jun. 4th to Boston arriving Jun. 19th, closed back to Philadelphia where complete strike of scarce "20¾" script rating handstamp struck in blue for 18¾¢ inland plus 2¢ ship fee, Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

This was the last Cunard westbound voyage before the 1845 U.S. rate change. As a result, this is the latest recorded use of this Philadelphia 20¾¢ rating handstamp.

Lot 359    

1845 (Jun. 7) Sheffield, England to New York N.Y., folded letter with illustrated Wm. Jessop & Sons Steel Mfr. letterhead, blue "Sheffield JU 18 1845" origin cds and manuscript "1/-" rating, carried by Cunard Line Acadia from Liverpool Jun. 19th to Boston arriving Jul. 2nd, blue manuscript "7" cent ship rating, Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

This letter arrived on the first steamship mail under the new U.S. postal rates effective July 1st 1845. Letter was prepaid 1 shilling for the transatlantic packet rate and 7¢ due for 5¢ inland postage under 300 miles plus 2¢ ship fee.

Lot 360    

1846 (May 30) Liverpool, England to New Orleans La., datelined folded letter with "Ship-Letter, Liverpool, MY 30, 46" rimless crown backstamp with "2/8" at 4x the 8d ship letter rate, carried by Great Western to New York arriving Jun. 15th, red "New-York Jun 15" cds with blue manuscript "32" due rating for 3x 10¢ inland plus 2¢ ship fee, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

This letter weighed between 1 and 1½ oz., and the British rated it 4x the 8d ship rate since they had no triple rate, whereas New York rated it as a triple rate upon arrival.

1846-55 Paris, France To Philadelphia, Pa., 2 folded letters sent by British contract steamship via G.B.; 1846 cover by special arrangement between P.M.G. & Liverpool P.M. with blue "12" in circle due handstamp applied in Philadelphia rather than port of entry (Boston), other 1855 cover with manuscript "13" decimes pre-paid and "Boston Br. Pkt, 5, Mar 2" cds, Very Fine.
