Jul 9" integral rate cds for 10¢ inland postage plus 24¢ packet rate, F.-V.F., Rare first Westbound Voyage into the United States during the Retaliatory period.

(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Jun. 30) London, England to New York N.Y., blue datelined folded letter indistinct blue "Tooley St" straightline and magenta "1/-" prepaid rating, red London 'Paid' (6.30) cds and red manuscript "1/-" shilling restatement rating, carried as endorsed by Cunard Line Niagara from Liverpool Jul. 1st to Boston arriving Jul. 12th, red "Boston Ms. 'Ship' Jul 12" cds and matching "29" cent retaliatory rating, Very Fine and choice, This was the first retaliatory sailing into Boston, the second of the period.

Baring Brother & Co., blue "Philadelphia Pa. Jul 18" cds and matching framed "Paid" and small "29" carried as endorsed by Cunard Line Caledonia from New York Jul. 19th to Liverpool arriving Aug. 2nd, red London (8.3) backstamps and manuscript "1/-" shilling retaliatory fee, forwarded with G.B. 1d red tied by "61" oval grid cancel to Fentons Hotel, St. James; some edge wear and small tear, Very Fine, ex-Gibson (handstamp).
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

THE EARLIEST EXAMPLE OF THE SCARCE PHILADELPHIA SMALL "29" RATING HANDSTAMP.

This cover was prepaid 29¢ for the 24¢ transatlantic packet plus 5¢ for U.S. postage under 300 miles. Letter carried on the 3rd of 26 Cunard mail eastbound voyages to England under the retaliatory order with Great Britain charging the 1 shilling retaliatory packet fee upon arrival.

"29" cent rating, carried by Cunard Line Niagara from Boston Jul. 26th to Liverpool arriving Aug. 6th, red London (8.6) transit backstamp and matching "Colonies, & Art. 13." framed accounting handstamp, red Boulogne (8.8) entry cds with "20" decimes due rating; some edge wear and light soiling, F.-V.F. and scarce use to France.

(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Aug. 23) Halifax, Nova Scotia to New York N.Y., blue folded letter with red "Halifax, Nova Scotia, Paid, Aug 23, 1848" tombstone style postmark with red manuscript "1/1½" 1s1½d rating, carried by Cunard Line Britannia from Halifax Aug. 24th to Boston arriving Aug. 26th, Boston red "29" cent retaliatory due rating; two file folds, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

A scarce use from Halifax on Cunard Line steamers during the expensive retaliatory rate period. Letter was prepaid 1s1½d for 1s packet fee plus 1½d inland postage with Boston charging 29¢ retaliatory fee for the 24¢ packet fee plus 5¢ inland postage for under 300 miles to New York.
