1859 (Jun. 17) Philadelphia Pa. to Cognac, France, folded letter with red "Philadelphia 'Paid 3' Jun 17" cds and matching red "Paid 15" handstamp, carried by Vanderbilt Line Ariel from New York Jun. 18th to Le Havre arriving Jul. 2nd, blue Le Havre (7.2) octagon transit datestamp, various backstamps including Cognac (7.4) arrival cds, Very Fine, A scarce usage on the Vanderbilt line, ex-Walske.

1860 (Aug. 4) Darlington, England to Wytheville Va., cover with blue "Darlington AU 4 1860" double-arc datestamp, carried by Cunard Line Niagara from Liverpool Aug. 3rd to New York arriving Aug. 16th, black "N. York Br. Pkt. '24' Aug 15" exchange debit cds with matching small "19" debit accountancy handstamp, manuscript "Due 24" at top left; edge flaws, Fine.

1860 (Sep. 24) Smyrna, Turkey to Savannah Ga., forwarded to Cartersville Ga., blue cover with Austrian Post Office "Smirne 24/9" cds, sent to Trieste aboard an Austrian Lloyd steamship where blue crayon "20 / 65" accounting Austrian new kreuzer, blue "6" Sgr debit handstamp and equivalent manuscript "15" cent debit, carried by Hapag Line Borussia from Hamburg Oct. 1st to New York arriving Oct. 18th, black "New.York, Am. Packet, Oct 18" exchange cds and manuscript "40" due rating, forwarded with "Savannah Geo Oct 21" cds and matching "Forwarded" straightline with "3" cent rating totaled to "43" cents, Very Fine, a scarce forwarded transatlantic use from the Austrian Post Office in Smyrna, Turkey.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Under the U.S.-Prussian Closed Mail convention of 1852, the rate established for unpaid letters sent from the Austrian Levant to the U.S. was 40¢ per ½ ounce. This amount was a combination of the 15¢ (6 Sgr) per ½ ounce fee to the German-Austrian Postal Union, plus the 25¢ cents per ½ oz. for the combined Belgian transit fee, transatlantic service and U.S. internal postage. Note that the "20/65" accounting in new kreuzer represents the 40¢ total postage due wherein the "20" new kreuzer (10¢) corresponds to the Austrian Lloyd fee from Smyrna to Triest, and the "65" new kreuzer (30¢) to the Prussian Closed mail rate.

1860 (Oct. 6) London, England to Kennebunkport Me., blue preprinted "Charles Gumm's Freight Circular, Per Steamer 'Arabia' " circular bearing 1d red tied by bold "36" oval grid cancel, carried by endorsed by Cunard Line Arabia from Liverpool Oct. 6th to Boston arriving Oct. 17th, accompanied by 1868 (Aug. 1) circular front preprinted "Duncan & Shaw's Monthly Freight Circular" to Bowdoinham Me. bearing 2d blue tied by "466" oval grid canceller at the 2 pence printed matter rate paid to destination that was in effect from October 1, 1867 to December 31, 1868 only, carried by Cunard Line Russia from Queenstown Aug. 2nd to New York arriving Aug. 11th, a Very Fine pair of printed matter usages.

1860 (Dec. 20) San Francisco Cal. to Angouleme, France, blue folded letter bearing 10¢ green, type II (32) strip of three, tied by two strikes of "San Francisco Cal. Dec 20 1860" cds, additional Dec. 21st cds strike adjacent with matching "15" cent rating handstamp, carried by PMSS Senora to Panama, then by Ariel from Aspinwall to New York, "15" crossed out and black "New York '3' Jan 16" debit exchange cds struck, carried transatlantic by Cunard Line Australasian from New York Jan. 16th to Queenstown arriving Jan. 26th, French (1.28) entry cds with "8" decimes due rating, Angouleme (1.29) arrival backstamp, Very Fine, Carried on the Maiden Return Voyage of the Cunard Line Australasian.

1861 (Nov. 19) London, England to St. Paul, Minn., cover bearing G.B. 1d red and 6d purple tied together by two strikes of "6" circular grid cancels, red London (11.19.61) backstamp and black "3 /Cents" debit rating, carried by Allan Line North American from Liverpool Nov. 21st to Portland arriving Dec. 6th, scarce blue "Chicago Am. Pkt. '24' Dec 10" exchange due cds; minor repaired hole, still a Very Fine and scarce Chicago exchange use.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Cover was short paid 6 pence for the 24¢ treaty rate plus 1 pence prepaid for the 1d late fee. London treated letter as totally unpaid and debited the U.S. 3 pence.

1862 (Mar. 14) London, England to Bowdoinham Me., datelined folded letter from Baring Brothers with "London, MR 14, 62" square chamfered postmark and "19 / Cents" debit handstamp, carried as endorsed by Cunard Line China from Liverpool Mar. 15th to New York arriving Mar. 26th, "N. York Br. Pkt. '24' Mar 27" exchange due handstamp, docketing at right indicating sent to Baring Bros., F.-V.F.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

This was carried on the Maiden Voyage of the Cunard Line "China" during which she broke her shaft and had to resort to sail for 4 days.
