1827 (Mar. 4) Batavia, Java to Providence R.I., datelined folded letter carried by private ship, entered mails with red "Salem Ms Jun 20" cds and matching small "Ship" straightline with manuscript "12" cent rating, clean and Very Fine.

1831 (May 7) Canton, China to Philadelphia Pa. via Salem Ms., datelined folded letter endorsed per "Sumatra", letter enclosed invoice and bill of lading of silks & teas on board the ship Fanny totaling $600.83, entered mails with "Salem Md Oct" cds and matching "SHIP" handstamp with red manuscript "58¼" due rating for 3x 18¾¢ plus 2¢ ship fee, Very Fine and early use.

1847 (Jun. 2) Calcutta, India to Boston Mass. via London, blue folded letter to the care of Baring Brothers in London, endorsed "Overland Mail" with red Calcutta backstamp and matching framed "India" handstamp, carried by steamer Bentinck to Suez and then overland across Europe to London where red Jul. 21st backstamp struck and ms. "2/3" due rating, remailed with red London Paid (8.2) Maltese cross datestamp and red ms. "1" shilling packet rating, carried by Cunard Line Cambria from Liverpool Aug. 4th to Boston arriving Aug. 18th, partial Boston "Ship / 6" in arc due rating for ship letter to port, Very Fine.

1851 (May 16) Hong Kong, China to Beverly Mass., blue cover to Mrs. Margaret Roundy with "Hong Kong, 16 MY 1851" double-arc backstamp, carried by P & O steamers to London via Southampton and overland, red Jul. 20th transit backstamp and manuscript "1/8" 1s8d due rating, "24" cents debit to U.S., carried by Collins Line Atlantic from Liverpool Jul. 23rd to New York arriving Aug. 3rd, black "New-York, Ship, Aug 3" cds and manuscript "45" cent due rating, Very Fine and scarce early use at the 45¢ British mail rate via Southampton.

Lot 553    

1855 (Jul. 21) New York, N.Y. to Canton, China, folded letter with red "New-York Am. Packet Jul 25" exchange cds with pencil "53" cent prepayment and red "32" credit handstamp to G.B., carried by Collins Line Pacific from New York July 25 to Liverpool arriving Aug. 5, London Paid (8.6) transit, Hong Kong (9.22) arrival backstamp, Extremely Fine, ex-Winter.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

Payment was for ½ oz. letter by British open mail via Marseille. New York used orange red handstamp to show 32¢ credit to the United Kingdom. Letter carried by P&O steamers "Valetta" from Marseille to Alexandria, "Hindostan" from Suez to Galle, Ceylon, and "Ganges" from Galle to Hong Kong, then by P&O river boat to Canton. Letter reached addressee on September 25, 1855, two months after being written.

1875 (Sep. 9) Jamaica Plain Mass. to Yokohama, Japan, Lyman correspondence cover bearing 3¢ green (158) and 12¢ purple (162) tied by "Jamaica Plain Mass. Sep 9" cds duplex at the 15¢ treaty rate, endorsed "Via San Francisco", Yokohama (11.1) backstamp, pencil "R 2 Nov 1875" receipt docketing, F.-V.F., A scarce franking prepaying the 15c direct treaty rate.

1879 (Dec. 12) New York N.Y. to Yedo, Japan, Lyman correspondence cover bearing 3¢ green (158) tied by "New York Dec 12 '79" duplex on Lyman correspondence cover to Yedo, Japan, marked shortpaid 2¢ with circled "T" handstamp and blue crayon "10" centimes due (2¢), San Francisco (12.19) and Japan backstamps, Japan "Due" in circle handstamp with pencil "4", Japanese handstamp and manuscript. characters, Very Fine and clean.
