Bamber & Co.'s Contra Costa Express, bold oval handstamp on 1861, 3¢ pink entire to San Francisco with "Answer By Bamber & Co.'s Express…" boxed handstamp, small pencil initial at top right corner thought to be the Wells, Fargo & Co. agent's, Very Fine.

Lot 253    

Bamber & Co.'s, Contra Costa Express, Paid., red oval frank handstamp (BAM-101) on 1861, 3¢ pink paste-up entire to San Jose, indicia canceled by "San Jose, Cal., Jul 17, 1863" postal cds; some faint staining at bottom, still Very Fine and very rare, three red handstamp franks are known, one of the three resides in the Wiltsee Collection.

Bamber & Co.'s Express, W.B. Hardy's Office, Oakland, Paid, scroll frank in brown (BAM-003a) on 1864, 3¢ pink entire to La Porte, Cal., with blue" J. Bamber & Co., S.F., Jun 11" cds and blue Wells, Fargo & Co. oval date stamp of the same day; slightly reduced at right, Very Fine, very rare and most likely a unique example of a Bamber frank recorded in a brown color, carried by Bamber from its W. B. Hardy's Office in Oakland to San Francisco and then by Wells Fargo north to La Porte.

Bamber & Co., Contra-Costa Express, San Francisco, oval handstamp on two covers from same correspondence to Oakland Cal., first with "Wells Fargo & Co., Grass Valley, Nov 26" blue oval datestamp on 3¢ red (U10) buff Nesbitt entire, printed black Wells Fargo paid frank; second with blue "Wells, Fargo & Co., Benicia, Dec 11" oval on 3¢ red (U9) entire, printed black Wells Fargo paid frank, each was taken to San Francisco and handed over to Bamber & Co., a Very Fine pair of conjunctive uses.

Bamber & Co.'s Express, S(an) F(rancisco), Feb 15, red double circle handstamp on 1864, 3¢ pink entire to San Francisco, with company ribbon frank of the Oakland office; reduced at left just affecting frank, Fine.

Berford & Co. Express, manuscript endorsement at bottom of folded letter datelined "San Jose Sept 19th, 1850" to San Francisco, with "Collect $1-" express free, entered the mails with scarce red "San Francisco, 2, Sep 24" integral drop rate cds (SAF-400), letter regarding ordering supplies and to reply by mail…(or better by Berfords Stages), mention of the 1850 San Francisco fire; small edge tear at right, Very Fine, a very early Berford's Express usage in combination with the rare San Francisco integral "2" drop rate postmark, ex-Dale Liechtenstein.

Berford & Co's Express, Paid, oval handstamp frank (BER-103a) on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to San Francisco, entered the mails with "San Jose, Cal., Jul 21" cds, Very Fine, a rare express frank with only four used examples are recorded in black.

Farley's Express, Camptonville, sharp strike of blue fancy framed handstamp on buff cover Burnham Me., "Camptonville Cal Dec 17" cds with matching "Paid" and circled "10" rating handstamps, original enclosure datelined "Indian Creek Cal Dec 13 /57" with minor mining news mentioning limited snow but considerable rain: "plenty of water, the most important element in mining…", Extremely Fine and choice.

Freeman & Co's Express, clear complete strike of early oval handstamp (FRE-101) from the Freeman's Office at Marysville, on buff cover to Sacramento; minor scuff in address panel, otherwise Very Fine, ex-Tatham.
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

ONE OF TWO EXAMPLES OF THE SMALL BLUE FREEMAN & CO'S EXPRESS OVAL HANDSTAMP FROM THE MARYSVILLE OFFICE.

Only two examples of the small blue Freeman first period (November, 1850 - November, 1851) ovals are recorded. Both are addressed to Sacramento. This small oval is recorded in black from San Francisco, red from Sacramento and blue from Marysville. This is the only instance of an early express using color with the same type of handstamp to delineate office location. All of the small ovals are rare with the red being the most common.

Lot 261    

Freeman & Co's Express, Los Angeles, blue oval handstamp (FRM-102) canceling on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to San Francisco, red Freeman scroll frank at top (FRM-002), handstamp slightly enhanced, otherwise Very Fine and very rare, single examples of a black and a blue Los Angeles hand stamp were recently found in an old collection, this being the example of the blue mark.
