Langton's Pioneer Express, Paid, fancy black frank (LAN-002) on 1861, 3¢ pink entire to Vermont, additionally franked with 1861 3¢ rose affixed over blue oval "Alleghany" handstamp (applied by Langton's prior to use), tied by "New York" double circle postmark & fancy geometric cancel, entire struck with red "Forest City" handstamp in rectangle at top & 2nd strike on reverse; small sealed tear at top affecting Forest City marking, slightly reduced at right, Very Fine.Estimate $300 - 400.
THE UNIQUE LANGTON'S FOREST CITY MARKING IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL LANGTON HANDSTAMPS.
Starting in Alleghany, Sierra Co., this entire then moved north to Forest City where a red straight line cancel was applied to the front and back of envelope. Langton carried, most likely to Placerville, on to San Francisco and from there to New York. Placed in the U.S. Mail at New York but postal authorities required the addition of 1861 3¢ stamp because the blue Alleghany oval had canceled the indicia.

This entire was received by Wells, Fargo & Co. at Havilah with Mead & Clark transporting it between that location and Visalia where envelope was given back to Wells Fargo for transportation to San Francisco.

Nichols & Co.'s Express, Paid., fancy illustrated printed frank on cover to San Francisco, franked with manuscript canceled 1857, 3¢ dull red additionally tied by red "Nichols & Co's Express, San Francisco" oval handstamp; minor tone spots, Very Fine, a very rare Nichols & Co.'s Express usage with only a few known bearing their San Francisco handstamp.Estimate $750 - 1,000.
C. P. Nichols and Edward Ludlow started their express in the spring of 1858, carrying mail between San Francisco and San Jose, and eventually expanding their routes northward; their distinctive express frank pictures a dog guarding a safe, sailing schooner, steam vessel and railroad train, and it was printed on plain envelopes and on 3¢ entires. Nichols & Co. eventually sold out to American Express, who adopted the same woodcut frank.

Organ & Tibbetts' Excelsior Express, boxed printed frank (ORG-002) on 1864, 3¢ pink entire to Dutch Flat; reduced at right just into indicia and restored, Very Fine appearance, the finest example known of this express frank as the two other recorded examples have had the indicia completely removed; with 2009 P.F. certificate.Scott No. U58 Estimate $750 - 1,000.
