Butterfield's Overland Despatch, illustrated Six-Oxen Covered Wagon letterhead letter datelined "St. Louis, July 25th, 1865", signed by proprietor David A. Butterfield, Very Fine and rare.

Lot 844    

Butterfield's Overland Despatch, gray allover illustrated ad cover noting destinations "To All Points in Colorado, Utah, Idaho and Montana Territories", addressed to Stamford, Conn., franked with 1861, 3¢ rose tied by "New York, Sep 23" cds and fancy geometric duplex, with original 1865 letterhead enclosure from N.Y. office; cover slightly reduced at left, otherwise Very Fine, an extremely rare ad cover.
Scott No. 65    Estimate $300 - 400.

In 1865-66, David A. Butterfield operated this Overland Despatch between Denver, Colorado Territory and Atchison, Kansas.

The Central Overland California & Pikes Peak Express Company, Denver City K.T. Dec 18, oval date stamp on cover to Pacific City Iowa, reverse with clear strike of green "Central Overland California & Pike's Peak Express Company, St. Joseph, Mo., Dec 24" receiving oval datestamp, entered mails with 3¢ dull red (26), straddle line s.e. at left, tied by "Saint Joseph Mo. Dec 25" Christmas datestamp; faulty including upper left corner repair, Fine, ex-Meroni.

The Central Overland California & Pikes Peak Express Company, Denver City K.T. Dec. 1, clear strike of oval datestamp on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to New York, reverse with second strike of Denver City oval without date used as company frank, oval "The Central Overland and California, Pikes Peak, Express Company, St. Joseph, Mo., Dec 10" date stamp, entered the U.S. mails with "Saint Joseph Mo. Dec. 11" cds and matching grid canceling, manuscript "Due 3" reiterated in pencil indicating a double weight letter, Very Fine and choice, ex-Barkhausen, Rogers.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

This entire was sent outside the mails from Denver to St. Joseph via the Central Overland Route (Denver-Julesburg-Fort Kearney) on a COC&PP coach. From there it entered the mails to New York.

The Central Overland California & Pikes Peak Express Company Jul 12 (1860) Denver City K.T, clear oval handstamp on yellow cover franked with 1857, 3¢ dull red tied by blue "Saint Joseph, Mo." cds with "Hinckley & Co.'s Express, Denver City, Jul 13, 1860" cds alongside, right ¼ inch of cover has been added including portion of stamp, however strikes are very fine, Fine, cover was carried by COC & PP Express to Denver and turned over to Hinckley who carried to St. Joseph.

The Central Overland California & Pike's Peak Express Co., Denver City K.T., May 4, clear strike of oval date stamp on 1861 cover to De Kalb, Illinois, franked with 1857 3¢ dull red (s.e. at right) tied by green "St. Joseph, Mo., May 14" cds, missent and forwarded with "De Kalb, Mo., May 21" cds, with original enclosure datelined "Denver May 2, 1861", Very Fine.

The Central Overland California & Pike's Peak Express Co., St. Joesph, Mo., Nov 15, oval date stamp over manuscript routing endorsement with additional "Collect 15cts", on cover to Denver City, Kansas, franked with 1857, 3¢ dull red tied by "Pacific City, Ioa., Nov 12" origin cds, forwarded to Mountain City with instructional notation from the Denver Post Master "Have your Letters Directed to Mountain City & we will send them on. P.M. at Denver City" at bottom left; stamp with small defects in top right corner and cover minor corner stain at top left, still Very Fine, ex-Dale-Lichtenstein; with 2004 P.F. certificate.

The Central Overland California & Pike's Peak Express Company, St. Joseph. Mo., Dec 22, neat blue oval handstamp on yellow cover from Iowa franked with 1857 3¢ dull red tied by bold straight line "Paid" handstamp, with matching "Pacific City, Ioa." cds, addressed to Mountain City, K.T., which later became part of Colorado Territory, endorsed "Care C.O.C & P.P. Express/St. Joseph" at bottom left, flap missing & small repair at top, just affecting marking, Extremely Fine appearance.

Lot 851    

Denver and Rio Grande Express, black frank (DEN-001) on 1887, 2¢ green entire to Whitinville, Mass., entered the U.S. mails with "Denver, Col., Oct 16, 90" duplex postmark canceling, Oct. 15 docketing at left and notation "Hurried & crowded with business, telegram secure date" at top, receiving backstamp, Extremely Fine, without question one of the finest known Denver and Rio Grande Express franked entires, with only ten recorded usages of this frank.

The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad ran this express service as part of their rail service over the railroad lines throughout Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.

Hinckley & Co.'s Express, Denver City, July 30, 1860, clear cds on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Denver City, Jefferson Territory, neat "Superior, Wis. Jul 2, 1860" origin cds cancelling; cover slightly reduced at left, Very Fine, ex-Gibson, Dale-Lichtenstein and Kramer.
Scott No. U2    Estimate $400 - 600.

The resident of the goldfields, unhappy with the great distance to the Kansas Territorial Government, created their own Territorial government which became Jefferson Territory. The federal government did not recognize this action. A few items addressed to Jefferson Territory exist, but there are no postal or express markings with that designation.
