A RARE 30¢ 1857 ISSUE FRANKING PREPAYING THE FRENCH MAIL RATE TO INDIA.

The 30¢ French mail rate to India was effective April 1, 1857 to December 31, 1869. The 27¢ credit was for 6¢ transatlantic packet, 3¢ British transit and 18¢ French transit with New York retaining 3¢ U.S. postage.

1863 (May 18) South Reading Mass. to Barcilly, India, 3¢ pink (U34) entire bearing 1¢ blue (63), 10¢ green (68) and 24¢ lilac (78), all cancelled by circular open grid cancels, matching "South Reading Mass May 18" origin cds, red "Boston Br. Pkt. 'Paid' May 19" exchange cds with matching "28" cent credit rating, carried by Cunard Line Australasian from New York May 20th to Queenstown arriving May 29th, red London Paid (5.30) transit cds and red crayon "1" pence credit rating, reverse with Bombay (7.8) and Agra (7.15) transits, and Barcilly arrival backstamp; cover and stamp faults, Fine.

The 33¢ British mail rate via Southampton was overpaid 5¢, effective April 1, 1859 to December 1, 1867. The 28¢ credit to Great Britain for 16¢ transatlantic packet plus 12¢ British transit, with the U.S. retaining 5¢ U.S. postage (plus the 5¢ overpayment).

The cover was prepaid for 45¢ British mail rate for ¼ to ½ oz. via Marseilles was effective January 1, 1857 to August 30, 1861. The New York exchange office weighed letter the letter at ¼ oz. or less, thus it was overpaid 6¢ for the 39¢ rate with a reflecting credit of 18¢ (6¢ French transit, 12¢ British transit).

Cover was prepaid at the 10¢ private ship rate via San Francisco to Hawaii effective April 1, 1855 to June 30, 1863. It would have been routed via schooner to the Gilbert Islands.

A rare heavy weight letter weighing between 1½ and 1¾ oz. prepaid at $2.90 British mail rate via Marseilles, with the correct credit of $2.06 to Great Britain for $1.36 British transit and 70¢ French transit. The U.S. retained four times the 5¢ U.S. postage (20¢) and four times the 16¢ transatlantic packet fee (64¢).
