(Oahu) Laie, Oahu, Nov 27, 1899, purple circular handstamp with manuscript date to left (282.011, 1R) on 1899, 2¢ rose, horizontal pair, Very Fine, a very rare postmark from Laie, with Only Eleven Examples of This Townmark with Manuscript Recorded (making this postmark a 1RR rating).
Scott No. 81    Estimate $300 - 400.

Eight strikes with manuscript dates are recorded with 1899 dates of September 21 & 27, October 2 & 14 (two strikes), November 21 & 27 and 1900 date of March 4, with the latest strikes being very light.

(Oahu) Punaluu, Oahu, Dec 14, 1898, complete purple cds and target duplex (255.9a1, 1R) tying 1894, 2¢ brown on cover to Waialua, reverse with Honolulu transit and clear strike of purple "Walalua, Oahu, Dec 15, 1898" receiving cds (281.01), Very Fine, a very scarce on cover usage of the Punaluu postmark.

(Oahu) Waikane, Oahu, Feb 5, 1900, purple cds and target duplex (255.9a1, 1RRR) tying 1899, 2¢ rose on cover to Santa Cruz, Cal., additionally tied by Honolulu duplex, purple straight line "Centimes" handstamp with pencil "40" rate above, U.S. Postage Due 1¢ + 5¢ pair and single pen canceled and "U.S. Charge, To Collect, 16 Cents" handstamp; stamp and cover flaws including missing backflap, F.-V.F. appearance, a very rare example of the Waikane postmark, with only 10 examples recorded.

Lot 183    

(Oahu) Wailua, 14th Aug, 1884, manuscript postmark (803, 1RRRR), on 1882, 2¢ lilac rose on small piece; stamp flaws, F.-V.F., accompanied by small Sarah E. Pierce, M.D. envelope with pencil "2ct Kalakana" notation which apparently contained this stamp.

ONE OF TWO RECORDED MANUSCRIPT POSTMARKS FROM WAIALUA, OAHU.

In the early years of the Waialua post office, business was conducted at the mission located on the present cemetery site at Emerson Road. Waialua received two sheets of Numeral stamps (@25 stamps per sheet) in 1859. In the 1890's, the post office was located in Mahaulu's general merchandise store. In December, 1898, the post office was moved to the Waialua railway station. From at least 1884, Waialua was a weekly stop for interisland steamships; in 1886, the service became twice weekly. Mail was carried between Waialua and Honolulu by the overland carrier service and by the steamships.
