(Hawaii) Puehuehu, Hawaii, Jun 16 1883, backstamp (282.016, 1RR) on cover to West Branch Mich. bearing 5¢ blue cancelled by matching three-ring cancel (approximately 12-13mm, unlisted), foreign mail red "Honolulu, Hawaii, Jun 20" cds (MH 235.12) and tied by two strikes of segmented rings cancel (Gregory ring3-23), reverse with red San Francisco Paid All (7.8) transit and West Branch (7.14) arrival oval, Very Fine.

(Hawaii) Volcano House, perfect strike of straight line handstamp (204, 1R) tying 1875 2¢ brown on 1888 cover to Kohala, with two strikes of purple "Hilo, Hawaii, Aug 8, 1888" cds (281.01) and "Kohala, Hawaii, Aug 11, 1888" arrival postmark (281.013), stamp natural s.e., trivial perf flaws & corner crease, Extremely Fine, ex-Fitzpatrick.

ONE OF THE FINEST ON COVER EXAMPLES OF THE RARE VOLCANO HOUSE STRAIGHT LINE POSTMARK IN BLACK.

This cover sold in our April 2006 sale, featuring the Floyd Fitzpatick collection, for $5,750 hammer. Volcano House is a hotel situated on the rim of Kilauea Crater in Hawaii National Park. In 1893, the office was described as a "postal agency" as an "accommodation to tourists."

(Hawaii) Volcano House, bold straight line postmark in red (204, 1R) tying well centered 1882, 5¢ ultramarine on cover to Denver, Colo., with matching oval "Volcano House., Crater of Kilauea, Hawaii" illustrated crater scene handstamp used as a corner card (213, 1R), stamp additionally tied by purple "Hilo, Hawaii, Nov 23, 1890" cds and target duplex and "Honolulu, H.I., Nov 25, 1890" duplex postmark, transit and receiving backstamps; cover with sealed tear at right and trivial faint edge soiling, Very Fine and choice; ex-Twigg-Smith.

AN EXTREMELY RARE AND ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF THE RED VOLCANO HOUSE STRAIGHT LINE POSTMARK AND ILLUSTRATED OVAL CACHET USED AS A CORNER CARD ON COVER.

This cover last sold in the R.A. Siegel's 2007 Thurston Twigg-Smith Collection auction sale for $8,000 hammer. In 1893, the Volcano House office was described as a "postal agency" with Lee as the "postal agent" as an "accommodation to tourists". During the period 1895-1897, Lee (manager of the hotel) continued to handle mail without official status. Ollie Shipman, manager of the hotel from 1883 to 1885 and John H. Maby, manager from 1885-1891, presumably preceded Lee as "postal agents".

(Hawaii) Volcano House, Hawaii., purple circular postmark without date (281.02) on 1897, 2¢ green postal card to Springfield, Missouri, light strikes of purple "Pahala, Oct 16, 1898" transit cds's (253.01, scarcity 3) on front and reverse, "Honolulu, H.I., Oct 18, 1898" duplex and Tacoma, Wash. transit postmarks, reverse with lengthy message from scientific party at datelined "Volcano House, Kilauea, Oct 16, 1898", Very Fine, the Earliest Known Usage of This Volcano House Postmark.
Scott No. UX9a    Estimate $500 - 750.

This date stamp was received at Volcano House in October of 1898, but without the dates. This is possibly a unique October 1898 usage showing the absence of the datestamp.

(Hawaii) Waimea, July 17, manuscript postmark (803, 1R) in cover to Lahaina, Maui, franked with 1864, 2¢ rose vermilion tied by matching manuscript cancel, additionally tied by grid handstamp with matching "Kawaihae P.O., Jul 17" transit cds (244.02, scarcity 2), 1872 year docketing at left, Very Fine and choice.

(Hawaii) Waimea H, Oct 24, manuscript origin postmark (807, 1R) on cover to Rev. Bishop in Honolulu, franked with 1875, 2¢ brown canceled by manuscript and tied by target handstamp, "Kawaihae P.O." transit cds (244.02, scarcity 2) and "Honolulu, H.I., Post Office, Oct 28, 1878" receiving cds (223.029), pencil docketing at left noting L. Lyons as sender, Very Fine, a rare Waimea manuscript postmark usage.
Scott No. 35    Estimate $750 - 1,000.

The Postmasters of Waimea were Rev. Lorenzo Lyons (1858-1886) and Miss E. W. Lyons (1886-1900). Parker Ranch was headquartered nearby and the town was also site of the mission run by Lorenzo Lyons.
