(Maui) Makawao, H.I., Post Office, Dec 15, 1882, complete strike of origin cds (238.02, scarcity 2) on reverse on cover to New Bedford, Pa., franked with 1878, 1¢ violet + 1882, 2¢ lilac rose, two singles tied by segmented target handstamps, red "Honolulu, Hawaii, Dec 16" transit cds additionally tying 2¢ stamps, S.F. transit backstamp, Very Fine.

Lot 151    

(Maui) Makawao, Maui, Jan 15, 1900, mis-shaped purple cds with manuscript date (281.011), tying 1899, 2¢ rose on cover to Spreckelsville, Very Fine, a very scarce usage of the manuscript dated 1900 Makawao postmark.
Scott No. 81    Estimate $200 - 300.

The postmark date failed and printed as a blot and for a short time in 1899. Manuscript dates are recorded for a short time between January 6th and May 12th of 1900. These strikes often are mis-shaped.

(Maui) Makena, Maui, Apr 5, 1898, complete purple cds (281.011, 1RRR) on back cover piece showing partial Honolulu duplex postmark, Very Fine, very rare with Only Six Strikes Recorded (last one during territorial period).

(Maui) Nahiku, Maui, Sep 17, 1899, purple transit cds (253.01, scarcity 2) on cover to Sprecklesville, with second strike canceling 1899, 1¢ dark green, corner margin pair, reverse with light "M.S. Grinbaum & Co., Lt'd., Honolulu, H. I., Sep 15, 1899" oval indicating origin, additional Maui transit postmarks including Hamakuapoku (281.011) and Huelo (281.01) on front and Keanae (255.01, scarcity 2) and Paia (253.01) on reverse; few ink spots on stamps, cover opened at sides for display, Very Fine, a remarkable usage bearing five different Maui transit postmarks.

(Maui) Peahi, Maui, Jan 29, 1897, complete purple cds (253.02, 1RRR) on 1894, 1¢ red postal card to Haiku; some small holes in card not affecting postmark, otherwise Very Fine, one of the finer strikes of this very rare postmark, with Only Five Strikes Recorded with this being the earliest.
Scott No. UX8    Estimate $750 - 1,000.

Peahi was a small plantation town on the north west coast of East Maui. Stamp sales in 1898 were unrecorded, but the postmaster was allotted a salary of $5.
