3¢ dull red, type I, Bergen N.Y. Sawtooth Perforations, showing sawtooth perforations on all four sides, tied by "Albany, N.Y., Aug 19" cds on light rose ladies envelope to Keeseville N.Y., Very Fine; with 2009 P.F. certificate.

A CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE BERGEN NEW YORK SAWTOOTH PERFORATION ON COVER. ONE OF ONLY 6 RECORDED COVERS, THIS BEING THE ONLY ONE USED FROM ALBANY N.Y.

In the Sesquicentennial book, Wilson Hulme reproduces an account from a later postmaster of Bergen, who had noted "About 1856, a shoemaker was postmaster of Bergen. Sheets of stamps then were not perforated and had to be cut apart with shears. He took the little wheel with a handle that cobblers and dressmakers used to make patterns, placed a stick across a sheet of stamps and drew his tool across, thus providing the first perforated stamp sheets.".

1852, 3¢ dull red, type I, unofficial "Chicago" perf 12½, position 29L7, perfs scissors-separated but mostly intact, bright color, tied by clear strike of "Chicago, Ill., Jul. 15, 1856" cds on buff cover to Columbia S.C., cover with sealed tear at top, a Very Fine appearing use; plated by Cellar with pencil notation on reverse.

A RARE AND VERY EARLY USE OF THE 3¢ 1851 ISSUE WITH UNOFFICIAL CHICAGO PERFORATIONS ON COVER.

Wilson Hulme recorded 40 examples of the 3¢ 1851 Issue with Chicago perfs used on cover. The earliest recorded date of use is May 3, 1856.

1852, 3¢ dull red, type II, two singles, mostly four margins, cancelled by ms. squiggles and left tied by matching "Way" rating on 1853 cover to Brougg, Switzerland, light strike of red "New-York Br. Pkt. Nov 30" exchange cds, carried by Cunard Line Arabia from New York Nov. 30th to Liverpool arriving Dec. 11th, red London (12.12) transit backstamp, stamps tied by red French transit cds, reverse with Basel transit cds and Brugg arrival cds, red crayon rating at center and manuscript "8/2" rating at top left, Very Fine.

1852, 3¢ dull red, type II, horizontal pair, with bottom "Three Cents" tablet separated and affixed inverted, on fresh c 1853 cover to Strong, Me., with full clear strike of blue "Via Nicaragua, Ahead of the Mails, Leland" boxed handstamp, entered the U.S. mails with "New-York, Ship, Nov 10" cds, Very Fine and choice, an attractive usage of the very scarce "Leland" Via Nicaragua handstamp; with 2015 P.F. certificate.

1851, 12¢ black, diagonal bisect, lower left portion of stamp with full margins at sides, tied by blue "Via Nicaragua, Ahead of the Mails" boxed handstamp on fresh cover to Boston, Mass., entered the U.S. mails with "New - York, Ship, 7cts, Apr 10" integral due rate cds, manuscript "Via Nicaragua" endorsement at top; central vertical cover fold, Very Fine, ex-Emerson, Knapp, Beals; with 1969 P.F. certificate.

AN ATTRACTIVE 1851 12¢ BISECT AND VIA NICARAGUA LETTER BAG OPERATOR COMBINATION USAGE.

During the period from 1853 to April 1855, bisected 1851 12¢ stamps were used on mail from San Francisco to prepay the 6¢ over 3,000 miles rate to the east coast due to a shortage of 3¢ stamps. Upon arrival in New York, the bisects were either accepted or rejected. In this case, the New York office did not accept the bisect and corrected applied the New York "Ship" cds with integral 7¢ due rating for a non-contract ship letter to another post office.
