Straightline postmark with manuscript date and matching "Free" rating on 1822 folded letter to James Gadsden, Adjutant & Inspector General, Washington D.C., contents concern the desire of the military sutler at St. Augustine to supply troops at Savannah; some separations along file folds, fresh and Very Fine.

St. Augustine, / 18 June 1822. Sharp complete strike of two-line postmark on folded cover to William Reynolds, Legislature Council, Pensacola, docketed that originally contained a petition of sundry inhabitants of St. Augustine praying a limitation to contracts not under seal; central file fold, clean and Very Fine.

St. Augustine, 3 Sept 1822. Two-line postmark and manuscript "Free" rating on folded letter to Colonel Towson, Paymaster General, Washington D.C., endorsed "Public Service" and written by Abr Eustis, Lt. Col. Commanding, advising that four months pay is now due to the troops at this station; tiny red contemporary ink mark, file fold toning, a Very Fine and early strike of this territorial postmark, ex-Meroni.

St. Augustine, E. Flor., Jun 14, remarkable bold oval postmark (type XII) in paint red on 1826 folded letter to Col. R. Jones, Adj. Gen., Washington D.C., letter is an acceptance of Quartermaster position; some fold separations, light stain at top, a Very Fine and beautiful strike, ex-Meroni.

St. Augustine, E. Flo., Mar 24, bold strike of oval datestamp as forwarding postmark (type XII) on folded letter with manuscript "Middleburgh N.Y., March 3d 1831" origin postmark and matching "Free" rating to Postmaster originally at St. Augustine and forwarded to Jacksonville, Very Fine.

Flo., "July 25", clear strike of fancy oval postmark and manuscript date with matching "18¾" cent rating on 1833 folded letter to Charleston S.C., interesting letter in regards to politics, waiting for the weekly mails, description of the city, exploring the old fort where Genl Gadsden was imprisoned, "the Engineers are now repairing the old fort, a cell which had been bricked up was opened and the cruel spectacle was present - a man or rather skeleton in chains was found, some poor wretch who had been entombed alive, the victim of Spanish revenge or superstition", also "Nullification must be the doctrine of the whole South - our very existence as a slave holding people is involved" etc., light toning, Very Fine.

Jly "10", neat strike of cds with manuscript "10" day and matching "25" cent rating on 1839 folded letter to Milan N.Y., contents concern running a hotel in Monticello and a store in St. Marks, also "the labor being all performed by black slaves, I have seen five hundred slaves at work in one field…There is continual war here with the Indians. I have been in three battles and in one there was three men shot down by my side…"; light toning and soiling, F.-V.F.

Lot 1347    

Wantons P.O., E. Flo "Apl 11", two-line town handstamp with manuscript date (type VI) and manuscript "18¾" rating on 1832 folded letter to James Westcott, Secretary and acting Governor of Florida, Tallahassee, letter concerning a petition from Alligator Fla in which signatures were all in the same handwriting, creating a new country and some excellent content reading in part "…Col Gadsden is now in this neighborhood, I am pleased that such a personage should be sent on so important an errand as a treaty with the Indians who are so troublesome to us. But I have doubts of his success for I fear there are too many busybodies instilling wrong notions in the minds of the ignorant and weak minded Indians…"; fold toning, Fine and scarce, One of only three recorded examples of this Wanton type IV postmark. This is the ASCC listing example.
