(Curry) Port Orford, O.T., Aug 22d, manuscript postmark (Whittlesey unlisted) with manuscript "5" rate marking on stampless folded letter (outer sheet only with no contents) to pioneer Oregonian Joel Palmer as Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Dayton O.T. "1854" dockets on the back, Portland, O.T., Sep 11 balloon cds (Whittlesey 3, R A) as transit postmark with Missent straight line handstamp, Very Fine, sent before the Port Orford Post Office was officially established so probably transported by private ship up the coast and then to Portland out of necessity.

(Curry) Port Orford, O.T., Jun 21, very large cds (Whittlesey 3, R B) neatly struck on 1853 3¢ red Nesbitt entire to San Francisco, "1857" pencil docket at left, slightly reduced at top and top backflap missing, minor edge wear, accompanied by a second example of the same postmark on piece with 1851 3¢ dull red pair tied, Fine.

(Douglas) Elkton, Oregon, two covers from the same correspondence to California, first with Elkton, Ogn., June 8/ 59 manuscript postmark (Whittlesey 1 but earlier, R 6), 1857 3¢ dull red type II cancelled by pen strokes and just tied, second with similar Feb 14 manuscript postmark without year date but first day of Oregon statehood if 1859, 1857 3¢ dull red type II (straddle line at left) uncancelled, early statehood uses from a Post Office with no territorial postmarks recorded, Very Fine Pair.

Fiske P.M." postmaster's free franks from the same correspondence to Massachusetts, first with Scottsburg, O.T., May 6th cds with manuscript month and day (Whittlesey 2, R B), second with Scottsburg, O.T., Sep 16th 1853 manuscript postmark (Whittlesey 1, R B), both with "1853" dockets at left, first with minor corner wear at upper left and second with light stain at left, Very Fine Pair.

(Douglas) Umpqua City, O.T., March 24, manuscript postmark (Whittlesey 1, R B) on 1853 6¢ green Nesbitt entire to Illinois, indicia cancelled by drawing hair, an eye, and a beard on Washington, corner wear, F.-V.F., a most unusual "fancy" cancel.

The Umpqua City Post Office operated 1851-1869. Scarcity Index 8 in Helbock's books.

(Douglas) Umpqua City, O.T., May 13, 1857, cds with year date but manuscript month and day (Whittlesey 2, R B) on cover with 1851 10¢ green type I (Scott 13) cancelled by two strikes of the "1857" year date slug which matches the year date in the postmark, to Kentucky, small edge repairs at top, Very Fine.

(Douglas) Umpqua City, O., Oct 15, very large cds in blue (Whittlesey 5, R 6) on Civil War patriotic cover with 1857 3¢ dull red type II (straddle line s.e. at right) cancelled by pen strokes, to San Francisco, early statehood use of "O.T." postmark with "T." removed, slightly reduced at left, minor corner and edge wear, Very Fine.

Lot 1470    

(Douglas) Winchester, O.T., June 12th 1853, manuscript postmark (Whittlesey 1, R A) on stampless folded letter (outer sheet only with no contents) with "Free, Jo Lane" free frank of Joseph Lane as Oregon Territory's Delegate to Congress while he was back in Oregon campaigning for reelection, to pioneer Oregonian James W. Nesmith at Nesmiths Mills Oregon (after the short-lived Nesmiths Post Office had been discontinued so presumably sent to Dallas), original "1853" political letter evidently remains in the archives of the Oregon Historical Society but photocopy accompanies, Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The first Winchester Post Office operated for nine years only 1851-1860. Scarcity Index 9 in Helbock's books.

When Oregon Territory was created in 1848, Joseph Lane was appointed first territorial governor. He crossed the Oregon Trail and arrived in Oregon City, the first territorial capital, in 1849. He went on to serve four consecutive terms as Oregon Territory's Delegate to Congress. After statehood was achieved in 1859, Lane was elected one of Oregon's first two United States Senators.
