(Linn) Scio, Or'n., Jan 22, very clear cds (Whittlesey 2, R 5) on registered cover from the H.B. Shaw correspondence to Maine, three-color franking includes 1861-67 3¢ rose with grill, 1863-67 2¢ black with grill, and 1861-67 10¢ green with grill (s.e. at right) together paying the 15¢ registry fee plus second 1861-67 3¢ rose with grill paying the postage, all stamps cancelled by matching pen strokes with the 10¢ and second 3¢ stamps also tied by target cancels, additional strike of the cds extends under the 2¢ stamp indicating the sender probably decided on registration as an afterthought, appropriate "Reg. No. 2" endorsement at upper left (so the second registered letter send from the Post Office in the first quarter of the year, probably 1869 or 1870), "$10.00" annotation suggests that amount was once enclosed, Extremely Fine, An Exceptional Western Blackjack Cover.

(Linn) Union Point, O.T., April 12th/ 57, manuscript postmark (Whittlesey 1, R B) on legal-size cover to Washington D.C., 1851 3¢ orange brown strip of three and 1851 1¢ blue type IV cancelled by matching pen strokes, cover refolded at left and right to appear somewhat smaller, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The Union Point Post Office operated for five years only 1854-1859. Scarcity Index 9 in Helbock's books.

(Linn) Washington Butte, O.T., June 11, manuscript postmark (Whittlesey 1, R B) and manuscript "10" rate marking on stampless cover to Ohio, accompanied by original 1853 letter from a recently married minister to his sister, cover with corner and edge wear, F.-V.F., the earliest known Washington Butte manuscript postmark.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The Washington Butte Post Office, which was a forerunner of the second Lebanon Post Office, operated for seven years only 1852-1859. Scarcity Index 9 in Helbock's books.

(Marion) Jefferson, Or., May 1, cds (Whittlesey 2, R 5) on cover to Ohio, 1863 5¢ red brown pair (75) cancelled by pen strokes and faint second strike of the cds, accompanied by original 1863 letter from a man to his brother giving an account of a recent trip to Canyon City, cover slightly reduced at right and small corner repair at lower left, F.-V.F.

Lot 1494    

(Marion) Lebanon, O.T., Mar 29, manuscript postmark (Whittlesey 1, R C) and manuscript "10" rate marking on stampless cover to Illinois, accompanied by original 1853 letter from a husband and wife to her sister and brother, husband's letter expresses concern about the number of sickly emigrants arriving in Oregon and also states various prices current, cover with corner wear and foxing at right, Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The first Lebanon Post Office operated for seven years only 1851-1858. Scarcity Index 9 in Helbock's books.

Lot 1495    

(Marion) Salem, O.T., July 15th/ 50, early manuscript postmark (Whittlesey 1, R C) on stampless folded letter (outer sheet only with no contents) with manuscript "Free" to S. R. Thurston, Oregon Territory's Delegate to Congress in Washington D.C., small hole from when the seal was broken affecting the address, original 1850 political letter evidently remains in the archives of the Oregon Historical Society but photocopy accompanies, Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The Post Office at Salem was established in 1849 and so was the third Post Office in Oregon. Salem succeeded Oregon City as the capital of Oregon Territory in 1851.

Samuel R. Thurston emigrated to the Oregon Country in 1847. He settled in Hillsboro where he practiced law. Thurston served as Oregon Territory's first Delegate to Congress from 1849 until 1851 when, on his return voyage to Oregon via Panama, he died of tropical fever at the age of 35.

Lot 1496    

(Marion) Salem, Ogn., Aug 18, balloon cds (Whittlesey 3, R A) and handstamped "5" rate marking struck twice on stampless cover with "State Department, Oregon Territory, Secretary" imprint, Stark correspondence to Portland Oregon, accompanied by original 1853 legal letter signed by Secretary of Oregon Territory Geo. L. Curry, cover with minor corner wear and light edge toning, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

George L. Curry was a newspaperman who emigrated to the Oregon Country in 1846. He settled in Oregon City and became active in politics. Curry served as Secretary of Oregon Territory and also twice as Acting Governor of Oregon Territory in 1853 and 1854. He was officially appointed Governor of Oregon Territory in 1854 and remained in that office until statehood in 1859.

(Marion) Salem, Org'n., Jul 23, clear cds (Whittlesey 6, R 4) on unsealed cover to Vernon, 1869 2¢ brown (Scott 113) with negative cross with dots fancy cancel and tied by the cds, ornate but rather crudely printed corner card for "Stitzel & Upton" Portland Real Estate Brokers, Extremely Fine, a scarce 1869 2¢ western usage.
