Oregon & Idaho Expresses

Lots 1515-1524 Lots 1525-1527

Lot 1525

(Oregon Expresses) Wells, Fargo & Co., Umatilla Ogn., Jun 14, oval handstamp in blue on 1861 3¢ pink entire to Vermont, entered the mails with "The Dalles, Or, Jun 15" cds (Whittlesey 3, R 4), indicia cancelled by pen strokes, "1864" pencil docket, slightly reduced at left, corner wear at right, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

A singular Wells Fargo usage since this cover lacks a printed frank and it was carried down the Columbia River from Umatilla only to The Dalles before being mailed to the East. Normal company practice at the time was to carry eastbound letters to New York City for posting.

Realized: $190

Lot 1526

(Idaho Expresses) Tracy & Co.'s Oregon Express / Nez Perces Express, printed franks on 1860 3¢ red Star Die entire to Portland, Tracy & Co.'s Express, Dalles oval handstamp in blue, stain at left and corner wear at upper left, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

It is unclear why this cover to Portland bears a company handstamp from The Dalles since that place was nowhere near the Nez Perce Mines. In fact, The Dalles was halfway to Portland from the Nez Perce Mines.

Lot 1527 ()

(Idaho Expresses) Tracy & Co.'s Oregon Express / Salmon River Express, printed franks on 1861 3¢ pink entire to Wisconsin, entered the mails with Portland, Or., Jun 21, 1862 double circle postmark (Whittlesey 6, R 4), uprated to meet the 10¢ transcontinental rate with 1861 1¢ blue and 1861 3¢ rose pair (s.e. at right) tied by grid cancels, cover front only that has been rebacked and repaired around the edges, Fine appearance, ex-Barkhausen.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

This cover is in fact a Wells Fargo cover. Wells Fargo bought out Tracy's Salmon River Express and also his Nez Perces Express effective April 1, 1862, which also happened to be the start of the 1862 mining season. As a result, nearly all Tracy Salmon River covers including this one are actually posthumous Wells Fargo uses of Tracy franks.
