Sirius made only two round trip transatlantic sailings for the British and American Steam Navigation Company. The company chartered the Irish Sea steamer from the St. George Steam Packet Company in order to beat the "Great Western" for the first transatlantic steamship voyage.

The freight money fee of 12½¢ for a sailing ship and the U.S. inland fee of 25¢ was not marked. Toronto did not show freight money fees on letters. Since a freight money fee had to be prepaid at this time, this is considered a freight money letter even though it is not marked as such.

The commencement of the American Packet service on June 1, 1847 led to Britain imposing a "Discriminatory Rate" on mails landed at Southampton with all US prepayment ignored and the One Shilling Packet Rate charged to the addressee. This was carried on the second voyage of the Ocean Line "Washington".
