(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Jul. 28) Dunkerque, France to New York, N.Y., folded letter with Calais (7.28) transit on reverse and manuscript "12" décimes prepaid rating, red framed "PD" handstamp, red London (7.29) and Liverpool (7.30) transits, carried by Cunard Line Cambria from Liverpool Aug. 5 to New York arriving Aug. 19, New York applied small red "24" retaliatory due handstamp for the 24¢ packet fee; tiny edge tear, Very Fine and one of only 4 recorded examples of this small New York "24" retaliatory due handstamp, ex-Winter.

(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Aug. 7) India to Troy N.Y. via Liverpool and Boston, folded letter endorsed "Per Overland Mail" and carried privately to Great Britain, entered mails with red "Paid at Liverpool, SP30 1848" framed postmark with matching "1/-" shilling packet rating, carried by Cunard Line Britannia from Liverpool Sep. 30th to New York arriving Oct. 13th, blue manuscript "29" cent due rating for 24¢ retaliatory packet fee plus 5¢ inland postage, Very Fine.

A RARE INCOMING TRANSATLANTIC LETTER FROM INDIA SENT DURING THE RETALIATORY RATE PERIOD.

Fitzedward Hall (1825-1901) was born in Troy, New York and graduated with the degree of civil engineer from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Troy in 1842, and entered Harvard in the class of 1846. Just before his class graduated he left college and went to India in search of a runaway brother. In January 1850 he was appointed tutor, and in 1853 professor of Sanskrit and English, in the government college at Benares; and in 1855 was made inspector of public instruction in Ajmere-Merwara and in 1856 in the Central Provinces. He settled in England in 1862 and received the appointment to the chair of Sanskrit, Hindustani and Indian jurisprudence in King's College London, and to the librarianship of the India Office. Hall was the first American to edit a Sanskrit text, the Vishnupurana.

(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Sep. 15) Gibraltar to Petersburg, Va. via London, folded letter endorsed "via Boston or New York first steam packet" with "Gibraltar, SP 16 1848" cds and "Gibraltar-Paid" handstamp with red manuscript "2" shilling prepaid rating for the single rate, red London "Paid 23 SP 1848" cds and Liverpool (9.25) transits, carried by Cunard Line Britannia from Liverpool Sep. 30 to New York arriving Oct. 17, blue "68" rating marked in error as double-weight due, Very Fine and rare retaliatory use from Gibraltar.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Letter carried from Gibraltar to Southampton by P&O Steamer "Montrose" and across the Atlantic on 15th of 25 Cunard mail voyages to the U.S. under the retaliatory order. Prepayment consisted of 1 shilling packet fee to England and 1 shilling packet fee to U.S. New York thought letter prepaid 2 shillings as double rate and charged 2x34¢ postage due, or twice the 24¢ retaliatory fee plus 10¢ inland fee.

(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Oct. 7) Corcelles, Switzerland to New York, N.Y., folded letter with "Corcelles 3 Oct. 48" origin cds and matching "P.P." circled handstamp with manuscript "20" kreuzer paid for all transit fees by British mails, French Office (Pontarlier) red "P.F." handstamp, Liverpool (10.12) transit, carried by Cunard Line Europa from Liverpool Oct. 14 to New York arriving Oct. 25, New York red "24" retaliatory rating handstamp for packet fee, small edge tear, F.-V.F. and scarce retaliatory rare use from Switzerland, ex-Winter.

Oct 10" cds (inverted day slug) and matching "Paid" and small "29" rating handstamps for 24¢ packet fee plus 5¢ postage, carried by Cunard Line America from New York Oct. 11th to Liverpool arriving Oct. 23rd.

A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE PHILADELPHIA SMALL "29" RATING HANDSTAMP.

The 15 decimes rate was due in France, including 10 decimes for the U.K. and 5 decimes for a single letter sent 215 km from Boulonge to Paris. We sold another example of the Philadelphia small "29" rating handstamp for $4,313 in the Winter sale.

(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Nov. 1) Antwerp, Belgium to Castine, Me., folded letter written at quarantine grounds near Antwerp by sailing ship captain who crossed the Atlantic through a hurricane and arrived at Antwerp, it was carried privately to London and posted with "Fenchurch St" straightline postmark, red London "Paid, 10 NO 1848" transit and red manuscript "1/-" shilling prepaid packet rating, carried by Cunard Line Cambria from Liverpool Nov. 11 to New York arriving Nov. 25, red "New York 'Ship 34cts Nov 25" entry cds for 10¢ inland postage plus 24¢ packet fee, Very Fine and interesting retaliatory rate cover from Belgium, ex-Winter.

A SPECTACULAR FRANKING PREPAYING THE GREAT BRITAIN 1 SHILLING PACKET RATE CARRIED DURING THE RETALIATORY RATE PERIOD.

During the Retaliatory Rate period the New York Foreign Mail Office treated incoming prepaid mail as Ship Letters. The packet rate of 24 cents was charged plus the appropriate inland rate with the New York Ship Letter arrival stamp applied. This policy was applied to letters originating in Britain and to European mails which transited Britain.
