1857 (Dec. 24) Havana, Cuba to Edinburg, Scotland via Charleston S.C., datelined folded letter, entered mails with "Charleston S.C. Dec 28 1857" cds and matching "Steam-Ship" oval handstamp with red crayon "29" cent due rating for 5¢ U.S. transit plus 24¢ transatlantic packet fee, red "New-York Br. Pkt. Jan 6" exchange cds and black "10" cent circled debit rating, carried by Cunard Line Persia from New York Jan. 6th to Liverpool arriving Jan. 16th, Liverpool (1.16) transit backstamp with matching rare "ART-2" and "1/2½" one shilling 2½ pence due rating handstamps, Edinburgh (1.17) backstamp; some receipt docketing, Very Fine and rare, ex-Shephard.

May 27" exchange credit cds, carried by Cunard Line Persia from New York May 27th to Liverpool arriving Jun. 6th, red Aachen Franco (6.8) framed transit, red crayon "2-" due rating, Stuttgart (6.10) and Jun. 11th arrival backstamps; left 10¢ with small nick at left, Very Fine, Cat. $3,800 as off-cover pair and single; with 1988 P.F. certificate.

Jul 30 1858" cds, endorsed "Via Mail Steamer Packet from New Orleans to Vera Cruz" at lower right, Vera Cruz "4" reales due rating handstamp; some perf flaws, and cover faults, Fine.

Hiram Bingham Jr. in care of Messrs Castle & Cook at Honolulu, Hawaii, bearing, guideline s.e. at left, tied by large circular grid cancel, matching "Franklin N.Y. Jan 3" cds, endorsed "Via San Francisco"; postmark with some manuscript, Very Fine.

MAILS TO PACIFIC ISLANDS OTHER THAN HAWAII ARE EXCEPTIONALLY SCARCE DURING THIS TIME PERIOD.

Cover was prepaid at the 10¢ private ship rate via San Francisco to Hawaii effective April 1, 1855 to June 30, 1863. It would have been routed via schooner to the Gilbert Islands.

1859 (Jun. 22) Athens Ga. to Paris, France, cover bearing 3¢ dull red (26), horizontal strip of five, pair and single, all tied by four strikes of "Athens Ga. Jun 22" cds, red "New York 'Paid 24' Jun 28" credit exchange cds, carried by Cunard Line Europa from Boston Jun. 29th to Liverpool arriving Jul. 9th, French (7.11) entry cds and Jul. 12th arrival backstamp; small stain spot, some small stamp flaws, F.-V.F., an attractive double-weight use; with 1991 P.S.E. certificate.
Estimate    $250 - 350.

This cover was apparently short paid 3¢ for double the 15¢ treaty rate to France, but was accepted as fully prepaid with New York applying the correct 24¢ double-weight credit cds.

A SCARCE TRANSATLANTIC PREPAID CARRIER USE TO GERMANY.

Cover was prepaid 31¢ for the 30¢ Prussian Closed Mail rate to Prussia plus 1¢ carrier fee.

1863 (May 12) Paris, France to New Orleans, La., cover bearing 1860, 80c. rose on pinkish, four margins, just clear top left, tied by lozenge, Paris (7.12) cds and red "3c" h.s. as 3¢ credit to the U.S., London red "Br Service" framed h.s., carried on Allan Line Hibernian that departed Londonderry May 15 to Quebec arriving May 25, red "Portland Me. 'Paid 15' May 27" exchange credit cds; some light aging, F.-V.F., a scarce Portland exchange use, ex-Winter.
Scott No. France #20    Estimate $200 - 300.

Paris marked 3¢ credit to U.S. using a 3 centime postage due handstamp and red ink. While this is not a scarce usage of this marker, it is uncommon. Under the U.S.-French postal convention mails carried on Allan Line steamers (American mail contract) were accounted for as mails carried on British steamers. Letter in closed mail bag put off at Riviere du Loup on the St. Lawrence River and taken by train to Portland for distribution.
