1864 (Sep 26) Nassau, Bahamas to Philadelphia Pa., cover with red "Nassau, Paid, SP 26 '64" cds and red crayon "4" pence prepaid rate to William Rawle, Philadelphia Pa., pencil "51c" at top right, "N. York Br. Pkt. '5' Oct 1" exchange debit cds; cover tear, otherwise Very Fine, possible blockade run cover from the South, but no indication of origin.

Lot 1634    

1867 (Dec. 5) Cincinnati, Oh. to Carlsruhe, Baden, cover with blue "Cincinnati O. Dec 5" origin cds, "New York Br. Pkt. '23' Dec 11" debit exchange cds, carried by Cunard Line Persia departing Dec. 11 to Queenstown arriving Dec. 22, Verviers (12.24) and Baden (12.25) backstamps, large blue "45" kreuzer due handstamp; reduced at left, Very Fine, ex-Winter; with 1997 van der Linden certificate.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

U.S. debit included not only U.S. inland postage but also sea and British transit fees which the United States was required to pay to the United Kingdom. Transit through Belgium was paid for by the British. The Aachen exchange office clerk struck the blue "45" handstamp to show the postage due in Southern German currency, kreuzer (equivalent to 30¢). This uncommon handstamp was used only in 1866-67.

1869 (May 4) San Francisco Cal. to Reims, France, datelined blue folded letter with "San Francisco, Cal. May 4" duplex, sent as endorsed "Overland" by the Transcontinental railroad, black "New York '6' May 15" exchange cds and blue crayon "2" for double rate, French red packet "Etats-Unis, Paq. Fr. H No 2, 15 MAI 69" datestamp, carried by French Line Lafayette from New York May 15th to Havre arriving May 26th, reverse with Reims (4.26) arrival cds, Very Fine and choice.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

A VERY EARLY COVER CARRIED ON THE ALMOST COMPLETE TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD LINE.

The railheads of the transcontinental railroad met at Promontory Point, UT on May 10, 1869. Prior to that, OMC carried the mail between the railheads, and transit times gradually shortened. When this cover was sent, the railhead gap was probably only 9 miles and it took about nine days to New York.

Transatlantic Cover Group, 1839-56, six folded letters; includes 1839 Baltimore, Md. to London, England freight money letter and another 1847 usage from New Orleans (both ex-Winter), 1841 New York N.Y. to London, England double forwarder cover, 1853 New York, N.Y. to Switzerland by British open mail via Ocean Line Hermann, 1854 Boston Mass. to France carried on the maiden voyage of the Nashville for the Havre Line and 1856 Charleston S.C. to Switzerland carried by Havre Line Fulton, Very Fine.

Retaliatory Period Rates, 1848, group of 6 covers including 1848 Aug. 18 London to Petersburg Va. double rate, 1848 Nov. 25 Liverpool to Boston double rate, 1848 Sep. 5th New York to Paris, France double rate, 1848 Sep. 4th London, England to Boston with red "29" handstamp, 1848 Jul. 3 Philadelphia to France at 29¢ rate, and 1848 Sep. 4th Baltimore Md. to France at 34¢ rate, F.-V.F., an excellent group of this interesting rate period.

1851-67, Transatlantic Mail, group of three covers comprising 1851 Mores, Switzerland to Indiana with "New-York 'Ship 12cts' Apr 19" due cds, 1863 New York to Germany via Hamburg Packet with blue "4½ Sgr. / 6 Xr" rating handstamp, and 1867 printed circular with red lettering from New York to Holland missing stamps, F.-V.F. trio.

U.S. Postal Agency, Vera Cruz, Mexico, group of 5 covers including 1914 Jul. 14th with 1¢ Franklin local use to Ciudad, rest are used Jul. 15th 1914 including 1¢/2¢ bisects not accepted and 2¢ postage due tied by purple cds, and three uses of Mexico stationery with 2¢ postage dues tied by purple Jul. 15th cds's, Very Fine and unusual group.

United States Despatch Agent, B.F. Stevens, 22 Nov 1901, purple double-oval forwarders handstamp on Newfoundland 2¢ postal card to sailor in care of B.F. Stevens, light strike of duplex, datelined "Okak, 1 October 1901", Very Fine, This is the only B.F. Stevens use we have seen originating in Newfoundland.
