(Naval) War of 1812 Ransom for Sloop Taken by Privateer Benjamin Franklin, folded letter datelined "New York 11th Novr. 1813" and addressed to Benjamin Ayman at New Haven, Ct., no postal markings, letter reads "your favr of the 9th inst. I received and undertake to make a farther explanation. The bill attended to, was one given by John Weatherhead Commissary Genl. of St. Johns Antigua to Captn. Josiah Ingarsol for the Ransom of a sloop taken by Privateer Benjamin Franklin, which I understand Mr. Steward promised to have Collected and I thought through you a Remittance might have been made to Mr. Samuel Adams of this place, agent for said privateer, therefore should you not have any knowledge of the circumstance…"; file folds, Very Fine and interesting.

Shiwa sender's address on registered cover bearing 10¢ Trans-Mississippi (290) tied by cork cancel and purple "Registered, Sep 7 1898, San Diego, Cal." three-line postmark to Los Angeles Cal., Sep. 7th arrival backstamp; reduced slightly at right, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Before being sold in Port Townsend Wa. for $16,500, the "Corwin" made about sixteen cruises to Alaska. She also cruised to Honolulu, Hawaii and San Diego during her service.

N.H.H. & W.R.R. Co., Middletown, Conn., Jun 18 1869, blue double-circle company handstamp on cover bearing two 3¢ ultramarine (114) singles tied by "Middletown Ct. Jun 19" duplex to Poughkeepsie N.Y.; reduced slightly at left, Very Fine, The New Haven, Middletown & Willimantic Railroad Co. operated Route #14975.

Virginia Central R.R. May 13, clear strike of route agent cds on 3¢ red (U2) entire to San Francisco Cal., manuscript "Due 15" rating; some edge wear, Very Fine and rare railroad post office use.
Estimate    $250 - 350.

This double-eight cover was credited with half of the first ½ oz. prepaid 3¢, plus half of first ½ oz. unpaid 5¢ plus the second ½ oz. unpaid 10¢ for a total due of 15¢. This is a very usual treatment of the short payment.
