1861, 30¢ orange, cancelled by circular grid and "St. Louis Mo. Sep 18" balloon style cds on 1861 light pink cover to Paris, France, additional strike of cds at left, red "New York 'Paid 24' Sep 25" exchange cds, carried by Cunard Line Africa from New York Sep. 25th to Queenstown arriving Oct. 5th, Paris (10.8.61) arrival backstamp and small red "PD" framed handstamp, fancy printed "Office St. Louis Chronik. Book & Job Printing" corner card; flap torn, Very Fine and choice transatlantic use, This is an early use of the 30c 1861 use.

1863, 2¢ black, tied by New York circular mail circle of wedges cancel on blue 1865 folded James T. Abbott & Co printed circular datelined "St. Thomas, 21st November, 1865" and with "Per U.S.M.S. 'Havana' " directive to Baltimore Md., carried as endorsed by USBMSC Havana on the first northbound return voyage departing St. Thomas Nov. 22nd to New York arriving Dec. 1st, entered mails upon arrival; 2¢ small flaws from edge placement, Very Fine.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF MAIL CARRIED ON THE FIRST VOYAGE OF THE US BRAZIL MAIL STEAMSHIP COMPANY.

The United States and Brazil Mail Steamship Company was the first American steam passenger line to South America. Opened in November 1865, it was by far the largest carrier of mail and passengers to South America until its closing in 1875. This is the earliest recorded use of the 1866 2¢ Black Jack on DWI mails.

Foreign Mail segmented circular fancy cancels on 10¢ green (U40) envelope front with printed Wells Fargo & Co. frank from Victoria, Vancouver Island to London, England via New York bearing Vancouver Island 1865, 5c rose (5) tied by blue double oval "Paid" handstamp, red "N. York '3 Paid' Am. Pkt. Aug 3" exchange cds, red London Paid (8.16.67) arrival cds; minor cosmetic restoration and rebacked, Extremely Fine appearance.

AN UNUSUAL BLACK JACK STEAMSHIP USE FROM THE CARRIBEAN.

This cover is from the Thomas Looker to his wife while he was the paymaster serving on the U.S.S. "Brooklyn", a new 2,532 ton screw sloop that was first assigned to the Home Squadron when first commissioned on Jan. 26th 1859.
