Liberia, Settra Kroo, West Africa, Ap 10th, 1852, dateline on 2-page letter to the Mission House in New York, entered the mails with "Baltimore, Md., Jul 3" cds, matching "Ship" and "7" rate handstamps, letter written by black teacher Washington Mc Dougal, mentions traveling to native town in the interior including Crobar and Nanaa Kroo, Sassa wood drinking…We had a great Sassa wood drinking the other day. the first and second geou-- had to drink the poison as they were accused of having bewitched a boat belonging to Mr Johnson here. He sent or started his boat up to Sinoe with a load of rice. The boat is supposed to have been blown out to sea in a tornado and all hand lost; some internal letter splitting, Very Fine.

Liberia, Buchanan City, Grand Bassa County, Liberia, heading on ca. 1855 2-page enclosure with cover addressed to Suffolk, Va., entered the mails with "New York, Ship 5cts, Dec 14" cds, letter regarding settling into life in Liberia, sending of little bells for his goats because of leopards preying on them; some faint cover tone spots, F.-V.F.

Liberia, White Plains, Aug 22nd, 1857, dateline on 2-page letter from American black emigrant David Kelly to the Colonization Rooms in Philadelphia, Pa., entered the mails with blue "Baltimore, Md., Oct 5" cds with matching "Ship" and "5" rate handstamps, letter mentions sending letter on the (Mary) Caroline Stephens bound for Baltimore and the building of a lumber mill; file fold, Very Fine, a very scarce usage from White Plains.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

David Kelly went to Liberia in 1853 and started a farm which thrived well into 1861.

Liberia, Careysburg Jun 23th, 1860, dateline on 3-page letter with cover addressed to Cobham Depot, Va., entering the mails with blue "Baltimore, Md., Aug 21" cds, matching "Ship" and "5" rate handstamps, letter with interesting content regarding the area…There are about 400 in population here, about one hundred and twenty houses, the lots are ½ acres. I removed from this settlement last May to Marshall a settlement on the Junk river in this country about 45 miles from here, where I have charge of a small church, Very Fine, a very scarce usage from Careysburg.

Liberia, Grand Bassa, Liberia, 22. Dec. 96, clear strike of cds (CP.18A) on cover to Cape Palmas, with rubber stamp "P.E. Rectory, G. Bassa" corner card (missionary) and red crayon "Paid", with "Harper, Liberia" rimless cds (CP.12) on reverse; cover slightly reduced at left, missing sideflap and small tear with tape stain at top left, F.-V.F., a very rare internal usage with fee paid in cash.
