(Mariposa) Yosemite, Cal./ 1894 Jun 25, cds on cover franked with 1890 2¢, cancelled by indistinct cancel, cover with attractive blue illustrated corner card showing the Stoneman House with Half Dome in the background, small cover tear at top, Very Fine.

(Nevada & Yuba) Kyle Correspondence, 1856-60, of a dozens covers with original letters from John Kyle to his mother and sisters in Fannettsburg, Pa.; virtually all 1855, 10¢ Nesbitt entires, four mailed from Patterson (one with scarce manuscript postmark) and seven posted in Marysville, letters mostly of personal or local business, one letter of Jan 3, 1858 (Marysville) mentions Mormon War and California men wish to join to fight, letter from friend in the Sandwich Islands, trying to save enough to return home, etc.; covers most with cover flaws with nice manuscript and cds Patterson covers, generally Fine.

Lot 1221    

(Placer) Todd's Valley, Cal., Feb 17, clear cds (PLA-3660) on cover to Amherst, N.H., with matching Paid handstamp and "10 "rate in manuscript; some light water stain, F.-V.F., the only surviving example of Todd's Valley first postmark.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Todd's Valley is named after Dr. F. Walton Todd, a cousin of Mary Todd Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln's wife., He owned a store there in June of 1849 and was in the heart of the early gold rush.

Lot 1222    

(San Diego) San Diego Cal. Dec 18, clear strike of cds and manuscript "12½" cent rating on 1850 folded cover addressed to the Governor of the State of California, San Jose Cal., inside 1850 docketing; file folds, Very Fine.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

A very early intrastate letter from the tiny village of San Diego, population of 600, to the Governor Peter Hardeman Burnett at the State Capital in San Jose. Examples of the 12½¢ rate within California are quite scarce especially only 90 days after statehood.

(San Diego) "San Diego May 30, 1848" (Pioneer California Use), docketing on folded cover from Capt. Henry Lindsey to Messrs. William Appleton, Boston Mass., endorsed "Per ship Barnstable", no postal markings, Appleton was engaged in the Hide & Tallow trade, clean and Very Fine, ex-Forster, Walske.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

(San Francisco) San Francisco "July 2", bold strike of straightline postmark with magenta date and matching manuscript "40" cent rating on 1849 folded letter to New York N.Y., excellent three page commercial letter of Samuel Ward (brother of Juli Ward Howe) that commences "Our prospects have materially improved since the return of M. Mersch a wreck since the result of his trading voyage to the mines", Very Fine.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

This was carried on the second of three sailings of this postmark on the S.S. "Oregon" that departed on July 2.

(San Francisco) San Francisco, Cal., Aug. 10, bold strike of cds duplexed with target cancel tying 10¢ green (68), rich color, couple tiny perf flaws, on 1867 yellow cover from Vancouver V.I. to Boston Mass., blue "Post Office, Victoria Vancouver Island, Paid" oval frank handstamp, original enclosed letter datelined "Victoria V.I. July 31st /67"; trivial cover stain, Very Fine.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

A WONDERFUL 1867 USAGE FROM VANCOUVER ISLAND.
