(San Francisco) Woodward's Gardens, lemon cover with lovely illustrated design of Woodward's Gardens showing the Gardens and Pavilion Halls, franked with 3¢ Bank Note tied by cork cancel with 1878 San Francisco cds, also included is 2nd unused cover with different design of the Gardens, Very Fine and rare.

Woodward's Gardens was a combination amusement park, museum, art gallery, zoo, and aquarium operating from 1866 to 1891 in the Mission District of San Francisco, California. Woodward's Gardens was owned and operated by Robert B. Woodward (1824-1879), who became wealthy during the Gold Rush of 1849 and through his ownership the What Cheer House, a hotel and inn. Woodward opened the Gardens on the site of his four-acre estate after moving to Napa, California. Woodward had bought the property from U. S. Senator John C. Fremont.

Jan 12, cds on light yellow registered cover bearing pen cancelled 10¢ green (35) to Foxcroft Me, matching "Paid" handstamp with manuscript "5cts" rating and "Regis No 4" at top; reduced slightly at right and tiny corner mend lower left, flap torn, Fine-V.F., ex-Landau., F.-V.F., One of only four recorded examples of this rare California 5¢ registered "Paid" handstamp use. ex-Landau.

(Tuolumne) "Big Oak Flat, Sept 23 Cal", manuscript postmark (TUO-10, R5) and matching manuscript "5" due rating on buff cover to Doctor Pownall, Columbia Diggings, Sonora Cal.; flap faulty and some edge wear, F.-V.F., this is the only recorded example by Williams.

(Yuba) "Emerys Xing (Crossing), Cal., Febr. 2, '56", manuscript postmark (YUB-570, R5) on buff cover bearing 10¢ green, type III (15), four margins, cancelled by matching manuscript to Fairplay Wisc., accompanying correspondence letter datelined "Emerys Crossing, Jan 30th '57" may not belong, Very Fine and rare.
Estimate    $250 - 350.

The Emery's Crossing post office is known opened June 2nd, 1855 to July 15, 1858. This is the earliest recorded Emery's Crossing postmark as listed in Williams.
