Confederacy, 1861, 5¢ Green, horizontal pair, huge margins including irregular sheet margin at right, tied by two strikes of "Marion, Ala., May 26" cds with third strike at left on 1862 yellow cover to Ridgeway N.C. with James Buchanan three-quarter portrait in oval from the campaign of 1856, "John Andrew" imprint (Milgram JB-1); light water stain at right edge, Very Fine and attractive.

A REMARKABLE USE OF THE ANTEBELLUM BUCHANAN CAMPAIGN ENVELOPE IN THE CONFEDERATE MAILS DURING THE CIVIL WAR.

This type of Buchanan campaign envelope was manufactured during the campaign of 1856. In this instance, it was used by a resident of Marion, Alabama, during the war. Because Buchanan was popular in the South for his political views, this might also be regarded as a patriotic use.
