1862 (Feb. 11) London, England to Kings Cover, Newfoundland, cover bearing G.B. 1856, 6d lilac (27) tied by "London-N.W. FE 11 62" duplex, endorsed "via Trinity", carried by Allan Line via Portland, then by Osprey or Merlin from Halifax to St. John's with Apr. 30th arrival backstamp, Trinity (5.12) transit, the 6d rate was valid from Aug. 1st 1854, Very Fine.

1863 (Apr. 23) Douglastown (Miramichi) to St. John's, Newfoundland, blue folded cover bearing New Brunswick, 1860, 12½¢ blue (10), well centered horizontal pair, used with 1¢ brown violet (6a) strip of three, all tied by oval grid cancels, red crayon "8" pence double weight credit, reverse with Chatham (4.23), Sackville (4.24) St. John (4.27) and St. John's (5.3) arrival cds; file fold slightly affects left 1¢ with small tear, Very Fine, ex-Wilkinson.

1863 (Aug. 31) Douglastown (Miramichi) to St. John's, Newfoundland, blue folded letter bearing New Brunswick, 1860, 10¢ vermilion (9), single, used with 1¢ brown violet (6a), vertical strip of four, all tied by oval grid cancels, red crayon "4" pence stg. credit (Halifax to Newfoundland packet), backstamps include W.O. Douglastown (8.31) and St. John (9.21) cds; file fold slightly affects one stamp, Very Fine, a scarce prepaid 13¢ rate to Newfoundland, ex-Seybold, Carnegie, Wilkinson.

1864 (Nov. 5) Douglastown (Miramichi) to St. John's, Newfoundland, blue folded letter bearing New Brunswick, 1860, 10¢ vermilion (9), single, used with 2¢ orange (7) horizontal pair, all tied by oval grid cancels, originally with red crayon "4" d stg. credit rating, determined to be double-weight and marked with blue crayon "More to Pay, 8" but updated to "4" pence due (Halifax to Newfoundland) as credit given for first rate, backstamps include Chatham (11.4), W.O. Douglastown (11.5) and St. John (11.14) cds; slight edge wear, Very Fine, ex-Mackie, Wilkinson; with 1960 B.P.A. certificate.

1865 (Jul. 11) St. John's, Newfoundland to Sydney C.B., blue folded cover bearing Newfoundland 1857, 1d Venetian red (1), four margins, tied by mute 2nd cork type, red "St. John's - Newfoundland - Paid, JY 11, 1865" rimless cds, blue crayon "3" pence credit, North Sydney (7.4) arrival cds, choice and Extremely Fine, ex-Lichtenstein, Hart, Foxbridge.

THE FINEST OF ONLY 7 RECORDED COVERS SHOWING THIS PROVISIONAL CENTS-FRANKING.

The rate from port to port became 10¢, or 5d, with the introduction of the Cents currency on April 7th 1865. The first cents-stamps only appeared in November 1865. Of the seven surviving covers showing this provisional Cents-franking, this is the only one with a very fine four-margin stamp.

A REMARKABLE PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND 9D PACKET RATE COVER TO NEWFOUNDLAND.

When this was sold in the Lichtenstein sale, it was the most expensive P.E.I. cover realized.

1868 (Jan. 18) Charlottetown P.E.I. to St. John's, Newfoundland, folded cover from the Boyd correspondence bearing P.E.I. 1866, 6d yellow-green (7), tied by grid cancel, "Prince Edward Island, 12 Jan 1868" origin backstamp, two-line "MISSENT-TO / ST. JOHN N.B." handstamp, reverse with Amherst (1.16), St. John (1.21) and sent back to Charlottetown with P.E.I. (1.25) cds, St. John's (2.17) arrival backstamp, blue crayon "4" pence packet rating crossed out and updated to "10" cents due in Newfoundland as an unpaid letter; small edge flaws and wear, Fine and rare missent use, Illustrated in Pratt.
Estimate    $5,000 - 7,500.

The rate from P.E.I. to Newfoundland was 9d, and this letter was short paid 3d. The amount due was 3d plus a 3d fine totalling 6d due, or 10¢.

(10.9) and Halifax (10.11) transits, St. John's (10.26) arrival cds, Very Fine; with 2008 Sismondo certificate.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

A CHOICE LARGE QUEEN USE FROM NEW BRUNSWICK TO NEWFOUNDLAND AT THE RARE 12½¢ RATE.

The rate from Canada to Newfoundland was reduced to 12½¢ on June 1st 1865. The route was run from Halifax by Inman from July 1868 to February 1872.
