N.S." handstamp on reverse, carried by Cunard Line Caledonia to Liverpool, red "Colonies/&c.Art.13." framed handstamp applied at London, red Boulogne (6.2) entry cds with manuscript "16" décimes due rating for 12 décimes transatlantic packet (10d going to G.B.), and 4 décimes French inland postage, St. Jeandes Champs (6.4) arrival backstamp; some light staining and reverse aged with some paper loss, Fine and rare use.

This was carried by Cunard Line "America" on the last voyage prior to the introduction of retaliatory rates.

1848 (Nov. 19) St. Pierre to Boston Mass. via Sydney and Halifax, datelined folded letter entered mails with "SYDNEY. C.B. / SHIP LETTER" two-line handstamp and "Sydney C.B., DE 13 1848" backstamp with manuscript "4½" d.cy. rating for a ship letter plus "11½" d.cy. to Boston totalled to "1/4" 1s4d, manuscript note on reverse: "The Courier sailed on the 23d of November at 10 o'clock A.M." from St. Pierre to Halifax, manuscript "Recd at Halifax, 3d January 1849 and forwarded by A.B. Richards", Halifax (12.18) transit backstamp, carried by Cunard Line America to Boston; some edge wear and couple small tears, Very Fine.
Estimate    $3,000 - 4,000.

A RARE ST. PIERRE ET MIQUELON USE WITH THE "SYDNEY C.B. / SHIP LETTER" TWO-LINE HANDSTAMP TO THE UNITED STATES.

This was carried by Cunard Line "America" on the first sailing to Boston under the restored rates.

St. Pierre et Miquelon to Granville, France, cover without enclosure carried by Cunard Line America from Halifax to Liverpool arriving May 13th, red London (5.14.1850) transit backstamp and matching "Colonies/&c.Art.13." framed accountancy handstamp, Calais (5.15) entry cds and "15" décimes due handstamp, Granville (5.16) arrival backstamp; some staining, Fine.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

The new French 15 décimes rate was inclusive of inland postage and effective from August 1st 1849.

Starr" forwarder's endorsement, red "Halifax, Paid, May 27, 1850" tombstone postmark and red manuscript "4" d. stg. packet rating, carried by Cunard Line Asia to Boston arriving May 28th, red "Boston, 29 May, 5cts" integral due cds for inland postage due; some edge wear, Very Fine.

The sender writes "When you receive this write to me via Halifax per steamer from either New York or Boston and direct under cover to John Bouvinot Esq. Sydney C.B. pay postage to Halifax.".

1854 (May) St. Pierre et Miquelon to Dieppe, France, folded cover with blue Dibarboure & Cie. merchant's oval, Halifax (5.23.1854) transit backstamp, carried by Cunard Line Canada from Halifax to Liverpool arriving Jun. 4th, red London (6.5) arrival backstamp and matching "Colonies/&c.Art.13." framed accountancy handstamp, red Calais entry cds and "15" décimes due handstamp, Dieppe (6.7) arrival backstamp; some light wear, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

An official Post Office was opened on St. Pierre et Miquelon on March 1st 1854. The rate was now 25c. for the ferry service and excluded letter "Voie d'Angleterre" and by French ship. Although this cover was charged 15 décimes, the rate was supposed to be 12 décimes from March 4th 1854.

The 12 décimes rate was effective from March 4th 1854.

A SCARCE ST. PIERRE ET MIQUELON USE WITH THE "CANADA / ART 19" ACCOUNTANCY HANDSTAMP.

The 17 décimes rate from Canada via Angleterre was effective from August 1st 1849.
