1817 (Oct. 16) St. Georges, Bermuda to Dulverton, England via Halifax, datelined folded letter carried by H.N. Brig Saracen to Halifax, rimless "Halifax, 15 NO 1817" cds with manuscript "2/-" due rating, then carried by Packet Lady Wellington from New York to Falmouth, docketed as received Jan. 7th 1818; some edge wear and light staining, Fine.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

The two shilling rating was 1s3d to Falmouth (1d for Bermuda, 1s2d packet) and 9d to Dulverton (effective Jan. 1817).

Lot 270    

1818 (Oct. 4) Bermuda to Dulverton, England via Halifax, datelined folded letter carried by H.M.S. Saracen to Halifax, then by Speedy from Halifax Oct. 22nd to Falmouth where greenish "America F, NO 8 1818" rimless cds struck and manuscript "2/-" due rating, Very Fine.

Lot 271    

1841 (Aug. 17) Halifax N.S. to Bermuda, datelined folded letter with "Halifax, Nova-Scotia, Aug 17, 1841" rimless cds and manuscript "4" rating for 4d cy. packet rate, additional "7d" rating; small erosion role, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

From 1765, the packet postage between Halifax and Bermuda was 4d. stg. Any inland postage was separate. From December 5th 1842, the rate was per ½ oz.

On the introduction of decimal currency the packet rate became 8½¢. On May 1st 1862, the rate from Halifax increased to 10¢ and prepayment became compulsory.

1847 (Sep. 28) Frankfurt-Main, Germany to Bermuda via London, cover forwarded to London and entered mails with blue "St. James St." straightline and red manuscript "1/-" shilling prepaid rating, red London (12.4.1847) cds, endorsed "By Halifax Mail" at top, Liverpool (12.5) transit, carried by Cunard Line Caledonia from Liverpool Dec. 5th to Halifax, reverse with Halifax (1.3) transit, Very Fine.

1850 (Jun. 17) Hamilton, Bermuda to Edinburgh, Scotland, cover with red "Paid at Hamilton, Bermuda" crown mark and red crayon "1/-" shilling prepaid rating, matching red "Hamilton + Bermuda + JU 17, 1850" rimless cds, endorsed "English Mail via Halifax an Liverpool" top, carried by Ospray from Bermuda to Halifax, then by Cunard Line America to Liverpool arriving Jun. 30th, red London "Paid" (7.1) entry cds and Edinburgh (7.2) arrival backstamp, Very Fine, ex-Brassler, Saul.

1853 (Mar. 22) Knutsford, England to H.M.S. "Megson" at Portsmouth, Forwarded to West Indies and via Halifax, cover addressed to 2nd Engineer originally sent from Mobberely, entered mails with G.B. 1841, 1d red, plate 159 tied by numeral Knutsford "425" grid, reverse with green Knutsford (3.22) origin backstamp and London (3.23) transit, upon arrival readdressed to HMS Medea in the West Indies, manuscript "1/-" rating, carried by Orinocco from Southampton to St. Thomas and then by Derwent to Barbados, reverse with Barbados (4.22) arrival cds and additional red Apr. 22nd double-arc ties stamp, then by Spray via St. Thomas, Bermuda to Halifax (7.9 backstamp) and "1/3" cy. 1s3d due handstamp, then Lady Seymour to Bermuda and Clyde from St. Thomas (9.17) to Jamaica, reverse with Port Royal (9.21) backstamp, finally endorsed "Gone To England" and returned by Dee leaving Nov. 11th via St. Thomas and then La Plata to Southampton arriving Dec. 16th; opened on three sides for display, Fine.

1857 (May 1) St. Stephens N.B. to St. Georges, Bermuda, cover with "St. Stephens N.B., Paid" circular handstamp with magenta "8" rating for 3d inland postage to Halifax plus 5d packet rate, endorsed "Prepaid", reverse with St. Stephens (5.1), blue St. Andrews (5.2) and St. John N.B. (5.3) transits, carried by Delta from Halifax to Bermuda arriving May 12th; faults including no flap and small hole, Fine.

1862 (Jan. 26, Feb. 11) Martinique and Nevis to Yarmouth N.S., correspondence pair comprising Jan. 26th from St. Pierre, Martinique and Feb. 11th from Nevis, both with Nevis (2.11) backstamp, carried by RMSC Trent via St. Thomas (2.12 backstamp) to Bermuda arriving Feb. 26th, then by Cunard Line Merlin to Halifax with Mar. 5th transit backstamp, Yarmouth (3.8) arrival backstamp, both double weight letters rated "1/4" 1s4d cy. due; each with file fold staining, a Fine exhibit pair carried on the routing via St. Thomas and Bermuda.
