Hawaii, Honolulu, H.I., May 11, clear strike of red cds on circa 1884 cover bearing 5¢ blue (32) pair tied by two strikes of segmented rings cancel to Germany, upon arrival forwarded from Magdeburg to Blankenburg, reverse with New York May, Friedrichsstadt-Magdeburg (6.8) and Blankenburg (6.9) backstamps; no backflap, Very Fine, 1RRR in red.

A RARE USE OF THE "HONOLULU, H.I." 234.62 CDS STRUCK IN RED ON FOREIGN MAIL DURING THE UPU PERIOD.

The Honolulu H.I. 234.62 cds is known used on foreign mail during the UPU period in red only for a short time from February 1884 to May 1884.

Hawaii, Honolulu, U.S. Postage Paid, Mar 17, red cds (MH 242.03) on cover to Mrs. H.W. McCoughtey at New Bedford, Mass., red "San Francisco, Cal., Paid, Mar 30, 1860" cds and matching "12" rating handstamp for 10¢ transcontinental postage plus 2¢ ship fee; no flap, Very Fine strikes.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

A SCARCE USE CARRIED FROM HONOLULU BY THE USS "POWHATAN" TO SAN FRANCISCO WHILE ESCORTING THE FIRST OFFICIAL EMBASSY OF THE EMPIRE OF JAPAN TO THE UNITED STATES.

This cover was carried by the U.S.S. "Powhatan" from Honolulu departing Mar. 18 to San Francisco arriving Mar. 29th. Cover was then sent overland to New Bedford. The U.S.S. "Powhatan" had sailed from Yokohama, Japan Feb. 13th 1860 accompanied by Japanese capital ship "Kanrin Maru" stopping at Honolulu Mar. 5th to Mar. 18th enroute to San Francisco as part of the first official embassy of the Empire of Japan to the United States of America. The Japanese embassy was formally composed of three men: Ambassador Shinmi Masaoki, Vice-Ambassador Muragaki Norimasa and Observer Oguri Tadamasa.

Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaiian-Islands, Dec 26, black cds on reverse of 1868 cover to New Bedford Mass. with upper right corner cutout with 5¢ blue (32) replacement and bearing U.S. 3¢ rose (65) strip of four tied by bold quartered corks duplexed with "San Francisco Cal Jan 8" cds, red "Hawaiian Steam Service" oval handstamp at lower right, red crayon "Via Panama" directive, "New Bedford docketed "Honolulu, Dec 9 1868" and "Recd 1/26.69", Fine.
Gregory No. HON HI35    Estimate $300 - 400.

Cover carried on 14th contract trip by NPTC "Idaho" from Honolulu Dec. 26th to San Francisco arriving Jan. 8th. Entered the mails with San Francisco Jan. 8th duplex for forwarding via Panama.
