Hawaii, Jno. S. Smithies., purple straightline corner card handstamp (in postmark ink color) on 2¢ carmine (U2) to Honolulu H.I., two strikes of bold purple "Mahukona, Hawaii, Feb 10, 1893" cds (282.011, R4) to Honolulu H.I., reverse with "Honolulu, H.I. Feb 11, 1893" arrival duplex.

John Samuel Smithies was Deputy Collector of Customs for Mahukona, also serving as Postmaster of Mahukona (1887-1902) until his death. He was born in 1832 in Newfoundland and in 1850 came to Honolulu for J.T. Waterhouse. In 1889, he was appointed Collector of Customs for Muhukona.
