John Samuel Smithies was Deputy Collector of Customs for Mahukona, also serving as Postmaster of Mahukona (1887-1902) until his death. He was born in 1832 in Newfoundland and in 1850 came to Honolulu for J.T. Waterhouse. In 1889, he was appointed Collector of Customs for Muhukona.
