1861, 3¢ rose, tied by target cancel on cover to Detroit, Mich. with "Flushing, Mich, Aug 19" origin cds alongside; cover with superb strike of "Steamer Illinois, Sault, Aug 25, 1864" steam boat handstamp, bit reduced slightly at left, Extremely Fine and choice.

The "Illinois" was a side-wheeler of 926 tons built at Detroit in 1853 and abandoned in 1869. In July 1863, Ebenezer Ward was contracted to operate routes Cleveland and Chicago to Otonagon on the shore of Lake Superior. He arranged for name-of-boat datestamps to be used bearing the names of the port that a letter was put onto the boat at. Unusually, the payment was made on a weekly basis at $200 for three round trips per week.

1861, 3¢ rose, natural s.e. at right, tied by target cancel duplexed with "Phila., Pa., Jan. 5, 1865" cds on cover with yellow blue and red Venezuelan Flag patriotic design to New York, reverse with "embossed seal of United States Legation Venezuela" with American Eagle at center, cover endorsed pr. "White Wing" at top left, probably carried outside of the mails on the White Wing by diplomatic pouch, Very Fine and rare patriotic design, ex-Jarrett; with 2003 P.F. certificate stating Genuine.
