Wade Saadi discussed misaligned plate entries in his August 2010 Chronicle article. He suggests that the reason only five U.S. stamps prior to 1870 had framelines is because the siderographer had difficulty aligning the entries and, therefore, designs with ornamental frames produced a better appearance.
