1847, 10¢ black, four mostly large to huge margins, beautiful crisp impression, tied by red New York square grid cancel on blue folded Johnston correspondence letter datelined Charleston S.C. Jun. 3rd 1848 to Greenock, Scotland, sender's route directives "'Southerner' P.P. to New York" (post paid to New York) and "p Steamer Hibernia fr New York 7th June", carried by Cunard Line Hibernia from New York Jun. 7th to Liverpool arriving Jun. 21st, Liverpool America (6.21) backstamp and matching bold "1/-" one-shilling due handstamp, Greenock (6.22) arrival backstamp, vertical file folds, Extremely Fine, ex-Hubbard, Garrett, Boker, Gross.

1847, 10¢ black, position 22R, showing framelines recut at top and left and bottom right corner framelines not joined by nearly a full millimeter, ample to mostly large margins, tied by blackish blue grid handstamp on folded letter sheet to New York City, matching "Louisville, Ky, Jun 23/10" integral rate cds, Extremely Fine, a lovely example of this interesting recut position on cover, illustrated in Brookman; with 2012 P.F. certificate.

AN ATTRACTIVE AND RARE 1847 ISSUE USE ON CHRISTMAS DAY.

Christmas Day was not declared a federal holiday until 1870.
