1871 (May 16) Southampton, England to Philadelphia Pa., double-rate cover bearing G.B. 1d red pair and 4d vermilion, each tied by by "Southampton, MY 16, 71" duplex, carried by NGL Line Rhein departing Southampton May 16th to New York arriving May 26th; answer docketing, F.-V.F., ex-Tabeart, on his exhibit page.

1872 (Apr 26) Le Havre to New Orleans, gray datelined folded letter bearing France 1871 25c blue (58), two singles, tied by Le Havre numeral "1760" cancels, matching "Le Havre, 21 Avril, 72" origin cds along with red "PP" (part paid) handstamp denoting payment only to the U.S. port, carried Hapag Line Hammonia from Le Havre (4.27) to New York arriving May 8th, black "N.Y. Steamship '10' May 8" due cds, Very Fine, ex-Colin Tabeart.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

After the 1857 U.S. French treaty expired in Jan 1, 1870, and during negotiations for the 1874 treaty, a ten-cent rate was established for letters to a port in France or the U.S., with each country responsible for their own internal rates.

Apr 18" cds, red "New York, Paid All, Apr 23" exchange cds, carried in closed bag on Guion Line Minnesota departing New York Apr. 23rd to Queenstown arriving May 5th, Genoa (5.10) arrival backstamp; 7¢ small corner crease, Very Fine and attractive grilled issue franking, ex-Hugh Feldman; with 2004 P.F. certificate.

Sep 10" cds to Paris, red New York '6' Sep 10" credit exchange cds, red London Paid (9.24) transit and matching oval "PD" handstamp, letter refused and returned to sender, reverse with black "New York Jan 12" foreign mail cds and manuscript "9¢" due rating, Very Fine and interesting pair of covers.

1874 (May 18) Clarksburgh W.V. to Cairo, Egypt, amber Bassel correspondence cover bearing 1¢ ultramarine (156) and 15¢ yellow orange (163), tied by "Clarksburgh W.V., May 18" duplex, endorsed "Via Brindisi Italy", red "New York, Paid All, May 19" exchange cds and red crayon "10" credit to N.G.U., carried by Eagle Line Herder from New York May 19th to Hamburg Jun. 1st, slanted "P.D." handstamp, red crayon "Wf 4" 4sbr. credit rating for transit fee from NGU to Egypt, reverse with Trieste (6.5) oval, Alexandria and Cairo (6.11) arrival cds, still a Very Fine use, ex-Starnes.

Transit, Paid All" framed handstamp, carried on NGL Line Kronprinz Friedrich Wilhelm departing New York Jul 22nd to Southampton arriving Aug. 4th, closed bag until the Aachen exchange office where red "Recomandirt" boxed handstamp applied to indicate registration, Munich (8.6) arrival backstamp, Very Fine and choice use.
