Confederacy, 1862, 5¢ blue, Stone 2, "straddle margin" block of four, positions 49L-50L / 9L-10L, full margins to huge at right vertical gutter margin at right, rich color, o.g., never hinged, trivial inclusion spot, Very Fine.

The printing stones used for the blue Stone 2 stamps were prepared from the same transfer stone as the green Stone 2 stamps. The printing stone arrangement is the same for both stamps: two panes of 100 consisting of two transfer stone units of 50 for a sheet of 200 stamps.

Confederacy, 1862, 5¢ blue, Archer & Daly printing, horizontal pair, margins full to clear all around, tied by clear "Mobile Ala. Jul. 23, 1863" double-circle datestamp on small cover addressed locally, manuscript endorsed "per Senator" at bottom left designating a rare Confederate steamboat use, stamps with faults from being placed over the edge of cover, Fine and rare Confederate steamboat use; signed Green on reverse.

Confederacy, 1862, 5¢ blue, Archer & Daly printing, horizontal pair, tied by blue "Raleigh N.C. Apr 18, 1864" cds to Capt. Co. G. 44th N.C., care of Adjt. & Inspector Gen. Cooper C.S.A., Richmond Va., endorsed "Official Business", inside use with 5¢ blue (7) four margin pair tied by "Ashboro N.C. Apr 28" cds to Sarah A. Tillinghast, Fayettesville N.C., endorsed underneath pair by Capt. Robert Bingham, Very Fine and scarce official turned use.
Scott No. 7    Estimate $300 - 400.

Robert Bingham (1838-1927) was a Captain in Company G 44th Regiment of the N.C. Vols (McRae's Brigade) Heth's Division, A.P. Hills Corps in the Army of Northern Va. Capt. Brigham was captured at South Santa Anna Bridge on June 26th 1863 and held as prisoner of war at Johnsons Island, Fort Delaware, and Point Lockout, from which he was pardoned and sent to City Point Va. for exchange on April 22nd 1864. He must have received this letter the same day and due to the shortage of paper, turned and reused.
