1838 (Sep. 5) Milan, Lombardy-Venetia to Morrisville, Pa., folded letter from U.S. Navy surgeon George Clymer to his sister in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, about his travels in northern Italy, while awaiting a new flagship in the Mediterranean Squadron, Milan (9.5) datestamp and "F.C." handstamp, Paris (9.13) backstamp, carried by Union Line Baltimore from Havre Sep. 25 to New York arriving Oct. 25, red "New-York 'Ship' Oct 25" cds with manuscript "12" rating, Very Fine, ex-Winter.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

A SCARCE STEAMSHIP VOYAGE VIA GREAT BRITAIN FROM AUSTRIAN LOMBARDY TO THE UNITED STATES.

Under 1831 Franco-Austrian Postal Convention, France was entitled to 65 centimes per 7½ grams letter weigh (approx. 71 Austrian centesimi) for transit from Austria through the Kingdom of Sardinia to France. The Austrian internal fee that had to be prepaid was an additional 40 Austrian centesimi for the 42 km from Milan to the Sardinian border. "F.C." handstamp in red applied at Milan to indicate letter paid to the Kingdom of Sardinia border. The letter, as endorsed, was placed on a sailing packet at Le Havre for New York.

1838 (Dec. 15) New Orleans La. to London, England via New York, datelined folded letter addressed in care of Messr. Goodhue & Co. of New York to Baring Brothers at London, partial red "New Orleans" cds and matching "Paid" handstamp with "75" cent express mail rating, endorsed "Express Mail", red "Forwarded By, Goodhue & Co., New York" oval handstamp on flap, sent by private ship, entered mails with "Liverpool, Ship Letter" two-line handstamp and manuscript "1/7" rating, red London (1.26.1839) arrival backstamp, Very Fine and choice with Goodhue forwarders oval.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

A RARE TRANSATLANTIC EXPRESS MAIL USE VIA NEW YORK TO LONDON.

Letter sent by U.S. Express Mail from New Orleans at the single 75¢ express mail rate (three-times the normal letter of rate 25¢) to forwarding agent Goodhue & Co. in New York.

1839 (May 1) Boston, Mass. to Oporto, Portugal, gray datelined folded letter with prices current and showing red "Forwarded Through, Gilpin's Exchange, Reading Room and Foreign Letter Office, N-York" oval backstamp, endorsed per "Brig Padang to Lisbon", blue Lisbon (6.26) arrival backstamp and matching blue "160" Re-Issues due handstamp with manuscript "40" added for "200" Re-Issues due, indistinct blue oval "C. Est. de N." handstamp, a Very Fine private ship letter to Portugal.

1840 (Sep. 18) Manchester, England to Boston, Mass., folded letter with red "Manchester SP 18 1840" origin datestamp with red manuscript "1/-" shilling prepaid packet rating, carried as endorsed by Cunard Line Caledonia from Liverpool Sep. 19th to Boston arriving Oct. 3rd, Boston fancy red "Ship 6" scroll due handstamp, Very Fine and choice, Letter carried on Maiden Voyage of the Caledonia, and fourth round trip voyage of the Cunard Line., ex-Winter.

Lot 1272    

1840 (Oct. 20) Liverpool, England to New York, N.Y., datelined folded letter with red "Liverpool OC 20, 1840" backstamp and matching "Paid at Liverpool" framed handstamp with red manuscript "6/-" rating for 6x the 1s packet fee, carried as endorsed by the Cunard Line Britannia from Liverpool Oct. 20th to Boston arriving Nov. 3rd, red "Boston Ms. 'Ship' Nov 3" cds with "2¼ oz" and "1.70¾" rating for 9x 18¾¢ letter rate plus 2¢ ship fee, F.-V.F., an exceptionally high 2¼ oz. weight transatlantic letter.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Apparently the British did not have a 5x rate as the letter weighed 2¼ oz. and was rated 6x the 1s packet rate. The U.S. on the other hand did have the odd times rates.

Lot 1273    

1840 (Nov. 11) Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to New York N.Y., datelined folded letter sent unpaid and endorsed "p Montezuma", red "Baltimore Md, Jan 10" cds with matching "Ship" with red manuscript "1 oz" and "93¾" rating for five-times the rate for 151-400 miles, then corrected to "95¾" cents to include the 2¢ ship fee; file fold, F.-V.F. and rare quintuple rate ship letter from South America.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The "Montezuma" was built in 1823 for the Cope Line, and plied the Philadelphia-Liverpool trade route until 1835 when she was sold.

1840 (Nov. 30) New York N.Y. to Cognac, France, datelined folded letter with bold red "Forwarded from Harnden's Package Express & Foreign Letter Office, New York" oval handstamp, carried by Cunard Line Britannia from Boston Dec. 1st to Liverpool arriving Dec. 15th, flap with Liverpool "America / L" oval and red London (12.16) transit with matching "Packet Letter" framed handstamp with "1/-" shilling debit, red Calais (12.18) transit, Paris (12.18) and Cognac arrival backstamps, fresh and Very Fine.
