1849 (Apr. 24) Newport, Fla. to Dumfries, Scotland, folded letter with manuscript "Newport F., 27. April" postmark with matching "Paid 24" rating, New York large red "19" credit handstamp, carried by Cunard Line Cambria from Boston May 9th to Liverpool arriving May 21st, Liverpool Paid (5.22) cds and matching "1/-" prepaid rating, Dumfries (5.23) arrival backstamp, F.-V.F., ex-Winter.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

A SCARCE FLORIDA TRANSATLANTIC USE WITH THE NEW YORK LARGE "19" CENT CREDIT HANDSTAMP.

Letter marked for payment of 10¢ in lower left and crossed through when realized that full treaty rate had to be paid rather than partial payment. Large red New York 19¢ credit marking recorded used from April 1849 to February 1850 only.

1849 (May 28) Morrisville Pa. to London, England, orange buff cover with manuscript "Morrisville Pa., May 28" postmark and matching "Paid 24" rating, datelined letter from the sister of the surgeon on the U.S. Frigate St. Lawrence, care of Baring Brothers in London, red New York "19" cents credit to G.B., black "5" in circle debit handstamp to G.B. for the second rate, carried on Cunard Line Canada from New York May 30th to Liverpool arriving Jun. 12th, black "America, Liverpool, JU 12, 1849" backstamp, Liverpool agreed the letter was overweight so rated it both red manuscript "1/-" for prepaid first rate and black manuscript "1/-" due with "MORE to PAY" handstamp, red London (6.13) crowned circle arrival cds; small erosion spot, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

A RARE EXAMPLE OF ACCEPTED UNDERPAYMENT DURING THE EARLY TREATY PERIOD.

Under the treaty, letters could be sent either fully prepaid or unpaid; partially paid letters were to be treated as unpaid.

Lot 1337    

1849 (Jun. 6) Liverpool, England to Petersburg, Va., folded letter with Liverpool (6.8) backstamp and "19/cents" debit handstamp to U.S., carried by Cunard Line America from Liverpool Jun. 9th to Boston arriving Jun. 20th, Boston black "SHIP" handstamp with manuscript "24" due rating, Very Fine, This is the only example seen with the "SHIP" handstamp on a letter carried under the postal convention., ex-Winter.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Boston continued to use circular datestamps with the word SHIP for four months after the treaty went into effect. In this case, they used only a straightline handstamp SHIP. This was not a ship letter but a packet letter carried under the new postal convention.

1849 (Sep. 15) Manila, Philippines to Salem Mass., datelined folded letter forwarded to London by Fletcher & Alexander Co. (black oval backstamp), with red London "Paid, CT, 30 NO 30, 1849" cds and matching "5/Cents" credit handstamp to U.S., carried by Cunard Line Hibernia from Liverpool Dec. 1st to New York arriving Dec. 18th, New York red "Br. Packet, Paid 24, 18 Dec" integral cds, Very Fine and scarce origin, ex-Hegland.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Lot 1339    

1849 (Sep. 18) Halifax, Nova Scotia to New York N.Y., folded letter with red "Halifax, Paid, Sep 18, 1849" postmark with red manuscript "1/-" shilling prepaid rating, carried as endorsed by Cunard Line Cambria departing Sep. 19th to New York where circled "5" due rating handstamp struck, Very Fine, ex-Winter.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Letters from Nova Scotia by Cunard Line steamers required prepayment of 1s packet rate. Effective Sep. 20th 1849 (the day after this cover left Halifax), the Nova Scotia packet rate to the U.S. was reduced to 4 pence sterling or 4½d currency.

Lot 1340    

1849 (Oct. 30) Pittsburgh Pa. to Necharsulm, Wurttemberg, folded letter with red "Pittsburgh Pa. Oct 30" cds with matching "Paid" and "10" rating handstamp, carried by Cunard Line Europa from Boston Nov. 7th to Liverpool arriving Nov. 18th, red London (11.19) backstamp and matching "Colonies &c. Art. 13" framed accountancy handstamp, red Heilbronn (11.23) backstamp, red manuscript "38/4" rating totaled with red crayon "42" kr. due rating, additional manuscript "80/4/2fl5" rating at left, Very Fine and attractive use.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

According to Winter, the manuscript "80/4/2fl5" probably adds up a number of other letters paid for at the same time maybe to the same village. They probably mean 80kr., 5kr., and 42kr. for this letter, all adding up to a total of 2 gulden (florin) 5kr. or 125 kr., which was collected. This accounting for multiple letters is not usually seen on other Wurttemberg mail.

1849 (Nov. 25) Morrisville Pa. to Mahon, Minorca (Balearic Islands), orange buff cover with datelined letter from the sister of Surgeon Clymer on the U.S. Frigate St. Lawrence, manuscript "Paid 29" cents (5¢ overpayment), sent via British open mail to the U.S. Consul in Marseilles, carried on Cunard America from New York Nov. 28th to Liverpool arriving Dec. 12th, red London (12.13) backstamp and matching "Colonies &c. Art 13" framed accounting handstamp, sent via rail from Calais and Paris to Marseilles (12.17) backstamp where "15" decimes postage due rating, forwarded to Mahon via Perpignan (1.5) backstamp for conveyance by ship to Palma, then by ship to Mahon, Spanish blue "11.R." reales due handstamp for the rate from France to the Balearic Islands for a letter weighing 6 Adarmes., Very Fine and rare destination, Possibly the earliest letter to the Balearic Islands under the 1848 treaty..
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The "St. Lawrence" departed the U.S. on Sep. 8th for Germany to assist the Prussians in starting a new navy. She stayed in the European area until entering the Mediterranean, where she arrived at Port Mahon on Dec. 3rd for duty with the Mediterranean Squadron. She left the Mediterranean in the summer of 1850.

1849 (Nov. 26) New York to Carduff Kelly, Ireland, folded letter from, red "Forwarded by Abraham Bell & Co. New York" oval, black "5" cent debit to G.B., carried by Cunard Line America from New York Nov. 28th to Liverpool arriving Dec. 12th, handstamped "1/" rating for transatlantic packet fee, red manuscript "Not Found", returned to the United States, "Dead Letter Office, P.O. Dept." circular handstamp with manuscript "May 17, 1851" dating, V, Very Fine and scarce transatlantic dead letter use, ex-Winter.
Estimate    $600 - 800.

Addressee in Ireland never found, probably because there was no Carduff Kelly. Monaghan postmaster marked letter "Not Known" in red ink and and returned letter to London. Subsequently, letter returned to Dead Letter Office in Washington, D.C. because it contained a valuable (printed check for £7). D.L.O. opened letter, determined originator, and sent back to New York. Seventeen month delay in returning letter probably resulted from large backlog at D.L.O.

1850 (Jan. 6) Morrisville Pa. to Marseilles, France, cover with datelined letter from the sister of the Surgeon Clymer on the U.S. Frigate St. Lawrence, manuscript "29 Paid" (5¢ overpayment) sent via British open mail care of the U.S. Consul in Marseilles, carried on Cunard Line Cambria departing Boston Jan. 9th to Liverpool arriving Jan. 22nd, red London (1.22) backstamp and matching "Colonies &c. Art 13" framed accountancy handstamp, sent by rail from Calais to Marseilles, where the French manuscript "30" decimes due, the American Consul forwarded the letter to the U.S. Consul in Naples, Very Fine and early letter to Italy by British Open Mail.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

France debited 30 decimes French to Italy for transit. This letter went from Marseilles to Nizza, then directly to Naples.

1850 (Feb. 5) Lancaster Pa. to Germany, datelined folded letter with "Lancaster Pa. Feb 5" cds and matching "Paid" and "5" ratings, crossed out and updated with New York "24" debit handstamp, red "New York Feb 6" cds, carried by Ocean Line Hermann departing New York Feb. 20th to Bremerhaven arriving Mar. 10th, red "10 1/3" and "9 America / uber Bremen" handstamps, magenta "45 / 8" rating crossed out in red crayon and updated to "53 / 4" with "57" total due, Very Fine.
