1853 (Jan. 20) Philadelphia Pa. to Neuchatel, Switzerland, folded letter with blue "Philadelphia, Pa., Feb 1" cds, and red straight line "Paid" with manuscript "35" rating for Prussian Closed Mail, rate crossed out in New York and magenta "12" credit below, reverse with red Aachen transit and matching italicized "Franco" handstamp, blue manuscript "f2" rating, Basel (2.23) transit backstamp, Very Fine and attractive, ex-Barwis.

Packet Mar 5" exchange cds, carried by Collins Line Arctic from New York Mar. 5th to Liverpool arriving Mar. 16th, red London (3.17) transit backstamp, red "Etats-Unis Paq.Am.A. Paris" (3.18) transit cds, Basel (3.19) transit backstamp with red crayon "270" rappen due rating, Mar. 20th arrival backstamp; some minor pencil doodles, F.-V.F. and scarce use from San Francisco at the 26¢ British Open Mail rate to Switzerland.

1853 (Feb. 26) San Francisco, Cal. to London, England, blue folded cover with black "San Francisco Cal 1 Mar" cds with matching "Paid" and "29" rate handstamps, Boston red "19" credit handstamp to G.B., carried by Cunard Line Canada from Boston Mar. 30th to Liverpool arriving Apr. 10th, red London (4.11) tombstone datestamp, Very Fine, ex-Winter.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS SAN FRANCISCO "29" RATE HANDSTAMP IN BLACK.

Letter carried by Pacific Mail Steamship Co. steamer "Oregon" from San Francisco to Panama City and by U.S. Mail Steamship Co. steamer "Georgia" from Chagres to New York. Under U.S.-G.B. Convention, U.S. internal portion of total rate from West Coast was 10¢ from July 1851 until July 1863, or 5¢ more than other locations in the U.S.

1853 (Mar. 31) Trieste, Austria to Topsham Me., cover with red cds and matching "Franco 3." straightline, red "Aachen" circular postmark with matching "Paid / 25cts." framed and "Brit: / Packet" half-moon handstamp, reverse with red "Coeln / Verviers" (4.5) backstamp and ms. ratings "32 / 38" and "32", carried by Cunard Line Arabia from Liverpool Apr. 9th to New York arriving Apr. 20th, red "N.York Br. Pkt. 'Paid 30' Apr 20" exchange credit cds, Very Fine and attractive Prussian Closed Mail use, ex-Hahn.

The "New York Br. Pkt Paid 30" exchange cds (Winter 106) is known used 18 Dec 52 to 25 Apr 61. Although this letter appears to be datelined 1852, the correspondence, sailing data and known period of Winter 106 use, all correspondence to an 1853 year of mailing.

1853 (May 21) New York N.Y. to Bremen, Germany, gray datelined folded letter with perfect bold strike of "New-York 'PAID PART' 26 Mar" exchange cds and pencil "20" rating, endorsed "Steamer Hermann", carried as endorsed by Ocean Line Hermann from New York Mar. 26th to Bremerhaven arriving Apr. 10th, Very Fine.

THE FINEST RECORDED STRIKE OF THIS RARE NEW-YORK PART PAID INTEGRAL EXCHANGE CDS.

New York marked PAID PART as only the 20¢ Treaty rate to Bremen was prepaid.

Cy." circled handstamp for 1s4d due in Canadian currency equivalent to 1s4d sterling, Extremely Fine, a superb example of unpaid mail to Canada through the U.S. ex-Arthur White.

Paris" (7.3) transit cds, blue Basel (9.4) transit backstamp and red crayon "260" rappen due rating, Very Fine and choice.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Prepayment written in pencil lower left by New York post office. Basel marked letter for 260 rappen, the postage due for a double-weight letters arriving from steamers to England going to the first Swiss rayon.
