1853 (Jun. 30) Lima, Peru to San Francisco, Cal., docketed folded cover with "VAPOR LIMA / P" two-line handstamp and crayon "50" cent rating, crossed out in pencil and updated to "68" cents, Very Fine, ex-Hahn.

Packet, Jul 30" exchange cds, carried by Havre Line Franklin from New York Jul. 30th to Havre arriving Aug 11th in closed bag, red Le Havre (8.11) entry cds, manuscript "8" grams and "12" decimes due handstamp for double weight, Paris (8.12) and Blaont (8.13) arrival backstamps, F.-V.F. use by American Service direct.

1853 (Aug. 6) Bremen to Reading Pa., gray datelined folded letter with red "Johannes Beckemann, Bremen" company oval and endorsed "p closed mail via Aachen", sharp "ST. P.A. Bremen" (8.6) origin cds, manuscript "10" rating, red "Aachen" circular postmark with matching "Americ. / Packet." half-moon backstamp, blue manuscript "4" debit rating, red "Coeln. / Verviers" (8.7) transit backstamp, carried by Collins Line Pacific from Liverpool Aug. 10th to New York arriving Aug. 23rd, black "N.York Am. Pkt. '60' Aug 23" exchange due cds, Very Fine and scarce double-weight use from Bremen via Prussian Closed Mail.

The "N.York Am. Pkt. '60' " exchange due cds (Winter 20) was recorded by Winter from 13 Dec 54 to 14 Oct 58, this example is 2½ years earlier.

Lot 1391    

1853 (Aug. 11) Binche, Belgium to Nevada City, Cal., folded cover with red "Binche 11 Aout 1853" double-circle datestamp and red framed "PD" handstamp, red London (8.13) transit, carried by Ocean Line Hermann from Southampton Aug. 17th to New York arriving Sep. 1st; some edge faults, Fine, a rare cover sent to California paid to destination in British mail., ex-Winter.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter weighed 18 grams (marked on reverse) requiring 2x 20 centimes = 60 centimes (6 decimes) Belgium fee and 2x 1s5d = 2s10d British transit fees to destination via New York (Belgium circular 46 of August 13, 1851). Total payment was 34 decimes British and 6 decimes Belgium, or 40 decimes marked on reverse. American steamers "Georgia" and "Crescent City" carried letter to Aspinwall and "Oregon" carried it from Panama City to San Francisco.

1853 (Aug. 19) Riedbach, Bavaria to Snufftown, N.J., gray folded letter with blue "Riedbach, 19/8 53" double-circle datestamp, reverse with Frankfurt (8.20) cds, "Bremen, F. Th-Tax O.P.A., 24 Aug. 1853" half-moon and "S.T.P.A., Bremen (8.24) cds, red crayon "9" and large "7" grote debit handstamp to U.S., carried by Fritze Line Hansa from Bremerhaven Aug. 30th to New York arriving Sep. 20th, bold strike of "New-York Ship '27 cts.' Sep 20" integral debit cds, F.-V.F., Carried on the Maiden Voyage of the Fritze Line Hansa.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Thurn & Taxis Post carried letter from Frankfurt to Bremen debited Bremen "9" kreuzer for the transit fee. Bremen struck the stylized "7" handstamp to show debit in Bremen currency (grote) to the U.S. Postage due included 20¢ American sea postage and 7¢ German transit postage. Two different sizes of this uncommon Bremen "7" due marking exist.

Hansa made only five round voyages between Bremerhaven and New York carrying mails for this very short-lived Bremen steamship company attempting to compete with the American Ocean Line.

1853 (Sep. 20) Liverpool, England to Richmond Va., datelined folded letter with green "Liverpool, SE 21, 1853" cds and matching "3/Cents" credit handstamp to U.S., carried on Collins Line Baltic from Liverpool Sep. 21st to New York arriving Oct. 3rd, bold strike of "New-York, A.Pckt. '21' Oct 3" exchange due cds, Very Fine, a superb strike of New York' s earliest unpaid by American packet postmark.

1854 (Feb. 4) Milwaukee, Wis. to Tÿrol, Austria, cover with "Milwaukee Wis. Feb 4" cds and "Paid" straightline handstamp with ms. "21" cent rating, endorsed "Via Liverpool p. Steamer", red "New York Am. Packet Feb 14" exchange cds, carried by Cunard Line Arabia from Boston to Liverpool arriving Feb. 25th, red London (2.28) backstamp and "U.S. Pkt." straightline handstamp and matching "3½/Groshen" debit handstamp, red "Aus England Per Aachen, 1/3" transit backstamp and blue ms. "23" crossed out and "21" adajcent, red crayon "21", reverse with Contro, Fussen (3.4) and Innsbruk (3.5) arrival backstamps, blue ms. "6-55" rating; flap tear and some wear, Very Fine and scarce use.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Letter was sent letter at the 21¢ British Open Mail by American packet rate which paid the letter only to G.B. London marked U.S. PKT handstamp to show source of letter and sent it via Aachen to Austria unpaid under Anglo-Prussian Convention of 1852.

1854 (May 12) Glasgow, Scotland to Montreal, Canada via Boston, datelined folded letter bearing black Glasgow (5.13.1854) datestamp, green Liverpool (5.13) backstamp and black "7d" debit to Canada for British inland and sea postage, carried on Cunard Line America from Liverpool May 13th to Boston arriving May 25, Montreal "10d Cy." due handstamp for 10d in Canadian currency due, equivalent to 8d sterling, docketed as arriving May 27th, Very Fine, ex-Bruce Hazelton, Arthur White.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

This letter reported progress on the construction of the S.S. "Canadian" at the Wm. Denny & Brothers yard at Dumbarton. She was launched in July, and made her maiden voyage to Quebec in September.
