1858 (Jun. 19) Liverpool, England to Kennebunk Me., dated printed freight circular bearing G.B. 1d rose-red (SG 43) tied by barred numeral "466" cancel paying the 1d rate, carried by Cunard Line Arabia from Liverpool Jun. 19th to Boston Boston arriving Jun. 30th, Very Fine and attractive circular, ex-Graham Booth, Colin Tabeart.

Lot 1451    

1858 (Jul. 1) Iena, Thuringia, Germany to Philadelphia Pa., gray folded letter written by Alain Gibbs of Gibbons Philatelist, bearing "Iena. / 1 Jul. 1858" two-line postmark, manuscript "16" rating adjacent, ms. "fro" and red manuscript "3 / 10¾" rating at bottom left, crossed out in blue ms. and matching "f 10 ¾" restatement on flap, bold strike of Aachen "P." circle handstamp indicating paid direct, red "London Paid" (7.5) transit cds and manuscript "1" shilling credit rating to U.S., carried by Vanderbilt Line North Star from Southampton Jul. 7th to New York arriving Jul. 20th, "Philadelphia, Am. Pkt. Jul 20" exchange cds and "5" cent due handstamp; small edge flaws, otherwise Very Fine and scarce use.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Aachen marked the letter with 10¾ groschen credit to G.B, for sea postage of 8d (7¼ sgr.) and British-Belgian transit of 4d (3½ sgr.). Philadelphia marked the letter 5¢ due for British Open Mail rate by America packet.

1858 (Jul. 20) Boston, Mass to Cape of Good Hope via Plymouth, blue folded Howland correspondence cover with red "Boston Br. Pkt. 'Paid' Jul 20" exchange cds with pencil "45" updated to "33" prepaid rating and red crayon "28" credit to G.B., carried by Cunard Line Africa from New York Jul. 21st to Liverpool arriving Aug. 2nd, red London "Paid" (8.2)) transit and red crayon "1" pence Colonial credit, reverse with blue Devonport (8.3), red Capetown (9.14) and Port Elizabeth (9.17) arrival; tiny edge tear, Very Fine, A scarce prepaid 33¢ British mails rate via Plymouth., ex-"Patrick Henry".
Estimate    $300 - 400.

1858 (Aug. 9) New York N.Y. to Plymouth, England, datelined folded letter sent unpaid with "N. York Br. Pkt. '5' Aug 10" debit exchange cds to G.B., carried on Cunard Line Europa from Boston Aug. 11th, she collided with Arabia near Cape Race and put into St. John's, Newfoundland for repairs, mail and passengers were picked up at Halifax by Cunard Line Persia that arrived at Liverpool on Aug. 28th, Liverpool America (8.28) backstamp and matching "1/-" due handstamp, Plymouth (8.29) arrival cds, F.-V.F., ex-Graham Booth.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

1858 (c. Aug. 24, Jun. 5) Newark N.J. to Wurttemberg, two buff covers, first with black "Newark N.J. Aug 24 1858" cds and matching "30" in circle rating handstamp, black "New-York Br. Pkt. '23' Aug 24" debit exchange cds; other with red "Newark N.J., Paid, Jun 5" cds and matching "30" in circle prepaid rating handstamp, red "N.York Br. PKt. 'Paid 7' Jun 5" exchange credit cds, red "FRANCO" straightline; latter missing right flap, Very Fine pair showing the prepaid and unpaid 30¢ treaty rate.

Sep 3, 1858" cds paying the 15¢ treaty rate, red "New York, Paid 3, Sep 11" exchange credit cds to France for inland, carried on Vanderbilt Line North Star from New York Sep 11th to Le Havre arriving Sep. 25th, Le Havre (9.25) entry datestamp noting American service direct to France, two strikes of red "PD" framed handstamp in red, backstamped on the railway post offices from Le Havre to Paris, Paris to Lyon, and Lyon to Marseilles, Very Fine and rare; with 2002 P.S.E. certificate.

Point de Galle, Ceylon to Haverhill, Mass., folded part letter without dateline carried to Bombay by P&O steamer, indistinct "Bombay" backstamp and matching framed "INDIA UNPAID" handstamp, endorsed "Pr. Str. 'Bombay' " and "Overland via Marseilles" at top, red London (1.4.59) backstamp and manuscript rating on front, carried by Inman Line City of Washington from Liverpool Jan. 5th to New York arriving Jan. 19th, matching "45" cent due handstamp, Very Fine and rare use from Ceylon at the 45¢ British Mail rate via Marseilles, ex-Hahn.
