1859 (Jan. 8) Charleston S.C. to Barcelona, Spain, dateline folded letter with "Charleston S.C., Jan 8 1859" cds with matching "Paid" straightline and manuscript "63" rating, endorsed "Pr. 'Canada', French Mail", "Boston Br. Pkt. Jan 12" exchange cds and red crayon "54" credit to France, carried by Cunard Line America from Boston Jan. 12th to Liverpool Jan. 24th, French "Et. Unis Serv. Br. A.C., J" (1.25) transit cds with matching "P.D." framed handstamp, reverse with Junquera (1.28) transit and Barcelona (1.29) arrival cds, "8 Rs" due handstamp, Very Fine and rare use, ex-"Patrick Henry".
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Letter prepaid at three-times the 21¢ for single rate (¼ oz) letter by French mail. Boston credited France 54¢ (3x 18¢) in red crayon. Spain marked for 8 reales postage due, the rate for a double letter (less than 15 grams). Letter must have weighed over ¼ oz. (7.08 grams) and under 7.5 grams.

1859 (Jan. 27) Augusta Ga. to Belfast, Ireland, datelined folded letter bearing a choice 12¢ black (36) horizontal pair, s.e. at left, tied by two strikes of an "Augusta Ga. Jan 27" cds and red New York exchange office "19" credit handstamp to G.B, carried by Cunard Line Europa from New York Feb. 2nd to Liverpool arriving Feb. 14th, red "Paid, Liverpool, Br. Packet, 14FE59" cds, blue-green "Green Island / Belfast" handstamp and matching Belfast (2.16) arrival backstamp, Extremely Fine and choice.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

1859 (Feb. 16) Mobile Ala. to Genoa, Italy, folded cover bearing 1¢ blue (24) horizontal pair with left straddle line s.e., positions 91-92R7, left with "O" curls variety, tied by "Mobile Ala. Feb 16" cds, endorsed "Open Prices Current, per Steamer" at top, Very Fine.

1859 (Mar. 15) Glasgow, Scotland to San Francisco Cal., blue folded letter from the Well Park Brewery with blue "Paid, Glasgow, MR 15 59" cds and manuscript "1/2½" 1s2½d prepaid rating, bearing 1d rose-red (SG 36) tied by "Glasgow, MR 15 59" duplex for the 1d late fee, carried by Inman Line Kangaroo from Liverpool Mar. 16th to New York arriving Mar. 30th, then on the USMSSC Illinois from New York Apr. 2nd to Aspinwall, then by the PMSSC John L. Stephens to San Francisco arriving May 1st, San Francisco "PAID" handstamp, F.-V.F., Transatlantic late-fee covers are uncommon; from Scotland they are rare.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The sender paid the "1/2½" (29¢) treaty rate to San Francisco, along with a 1d late fee paid by the 1d rose-red for acceptance in Glasgow after the normal mails had closed.

1859 (Apr. 20) Boston, Mass. to Manila, Philippines, datelined folded letter care of Mess. Russell & Sturges, red "Boston, Paid, Br. Pkt., Apr 20" exchange cds (hollow "Br. Pkt." letters) with pencil "39" cent prepaid rating and red crayon "34" credit, carried by Cunard Line Canada from Boston Apr. 20th to Liverpool arriving May 2nd, red London Paid (5.2) transit cds, reverse with "Hong Kong, C" (6.18) arrival cds; bottom edge tear, otherwise Very Fine and scarce use at the 39¢ British Mail rate via Marseilles, ex-Hahn.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

The 39¢ British Mail rate via Marseilles for up to a ¼ ounce was effective January 1, 1857 to August 30, 1861.

York, Am. Packet. Aug 31" exchange cds and matching "33" cent due handstamp to cover the debit from G.B., Am. packet and U.S. inland; partial flap.

Fulton from New York Jun. 25th to Southampton arriving Jul. 7th, red London (7.8) transit backstamp and manuscript "1/-" due rating for packet to Calcutta plus French transit, carried by P&O Panther from Marseilles to Alexandria, and Nemesis from Suez to Calcutta, "Calcutta, Steam Letter, 1859 Aug 11" framed handstamp with "8" anna due (1/-) due rating, Very Fine and choice use to India, ex-Arthur White.

'3' Jul 9" debit exchange cds to Bremen, carried in closed bag on NGL Line Bremen from New York Jul 9th to Bremen arriving Jul 23rd, blue "Amerika über Bremen, 22" circular handstamp denoting 22 kreuzer due, reverse with Frankfurt (7.25), Stuttgart (7.26) and Boebblingen (7.26) arrival cds where 22 kreuzer due was restated in blue manuscript, Very Fine with crisp postmarks, ex-Hugh Feldman.
